I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

“The problem is that Scientology is a system that makes it nearly impossible for you to think for yourself. “

Beyond Belief is my third Scientology related memoir and, while it has its merits, there isn’t much about the cult that surprises me anymore which took some of the oomph out of this one. Jenna Miscavige Hill, unlike Ron Miscavige and Leah Remini, was born into Scientology. Her father, Ronnie Miscavige, was brought into Scientology by his father, Ron Sr, and her maternal grandmother had followed LRH since the ’50s. When Jenna was only two years old her parents decided to enter the SeaOrg which meant […]

Xoxoxoe’s Wonderful Graphic Novel

July 7, 2017 by Caitlin_D 4 Comments

Disclaimer: I received a copy of Unfinished through a CBR giveaway in return for a prompt and honest review. First of all, I unabashedly love Marilyn Monroe. While this makes me a prime candidate for anything involving the ’50s sexpot I am not usually a big fan of graphic novels. I tend to want more information than the format allows but Unfinished is vibrant & beautiful without sacrificing details. Elizabeth Periale, our own xoxoxoe, combines well researched facts and quotes with inferred internalized dialog and colorful illustrations. The structure […]

Why we vaccinate our damn kids now

July 7, 2017 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

Polio is a highly contagious disease. In 1949, there were 42,033 cases in the United States. One of those was a twelve-year-old girl in Austin, Minnesota: Peg Shculze. Me. Small Steps is a very accessible piece of non-fiction, due in large part to Kehret’s career as a children’s book author. Her childhood affliction with Polio would make for a fascinating read even without her writing background; by focusing exclusively on her illness and recovery the story never has time to drag. One morning, while singing chorus […]

“My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood. I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance. “

“Merricat, said Connie, would you like a cup of tea? Oh no, said Merricat, you’ll poison me. Merricat, said Connie, would you like to go to sleep? Down in the boneyard ten feet deep!” This was an excellently creepy, dripping with atmosphere, delight of a book. It hard to properly give this novel its due without spoiling the whole thing so you’ll just have to trust me, and the countless reviewers before me, that this is worth seeking out. The Blackwood family consists of: Mary […]

“My mind considers for one split second a world without Esther, and it makes me feel sad.”

July 2, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

First of all- it’s the midway point of the year/ CBR9! With 70 read books behind me Goodreads tells me I am 17 books ahead of schedule to meeting my goal of 107… I figure this is a good time to update my goal so I am going to push myself to 120 books. This averages to 10 books per month but gives me some wiggle room in case my pace continues to drag (12 books in May only 7 in June) . Wish me luck! […]

Tramps like us/ Baby we were…

June 28, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

It should be no surprise that one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of any generation wrote a phenomenal memoir- if you can light a spark in people in 5 minutes then 500 pages will set them on fire. I listened to the audiobook, read by Springsteen, and my only critique is many of the tracks are so long; at one point a disk kept skipping and I couldn’t take it out to clean it without having to start over literally thirty minutes from where I left off. I was […]
