I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

The Most Famous Woman in Vienna

The Lady in Gold is the story of Maria Altmann; not just her quest to regain custody of the painting of her aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer, but also her harrowing escape from Nazi occupied Austria. O’Connor delivers an exhaustive outline of the Bloch-Bauer family tree as well as other prominent Jewish Austrian families, there are a lot of names to keep track of (like any book that delves into upper crust society) and it gets dry in a few parts but overall it is an interesting read. […]

“No one likes being stereotyped, not African-Americans and not cops.”

The peaceful protest that turned violent on July 7th of last year gave Dallas the most world wide attention it has had since JFK was assassinated over 50 years ago.  I live in a suburb of Dallas and work in the city limits. It was a crazy, scary and sad time but Chief Brown did an excellent job and several people I know began wondering when he’d consider running for office. He retired a few months later- throughout the book he mentions of his plans to […]

Occupation: Urban Guerrilla

Found a book to get me out of my slump! The name Hearst is well known throughout the world due in large part to William Randolph Hearst, the publishing giant, helping build America. His granddaughter, Patricia, made the Hearst name famous for an entirely different reason. In February 1974 Patricia was kidnapped by the Symbionese (made up word) Liberation Army from her apartment. Her fiance, Stephen Weed, told her kidnappers to “take anything” which permanently damaged their relationship. The SLA was poorly run by Donald […]

I’m several decades too young for this one

August 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I picked up Frank Langella’s collection of essays at the recommendation for Jeffrey Tambor. He also recommended Bruce Springsteen’s memoir and  that was phenomenal. I feel like Dropped Names would be phenomenal to someone my dad’s age, but I found it a big boring. Most of his stories are decades old and include people I’ve never heard of which made them less impactful. This is essentially a more high brow version of Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins but my sphere of knowledge is more similar to […]

Poor unfortunate retelling

August 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Continuing the theme of “things that disappoint” … What was this hot mess? ♫ I admit that in the past I’ve been a nasty They weren’t kidding when they called me, well, a witch ♫ I am all about retellings but this was pretty weak. Ursula is ripe for the picking when it comes to delving into the psyche of a secondary character! She’s a fabulous drag queen octopus! How do you screw that up? How is she still a secondary character in her own story! Not […]

I apologize in advance for all the swears

August 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

This falls into the category of: Intriguing concept. Poor execution. I haven’t read anything by Stephen King before, which is probably blasphemous, but I’ve seen several of his adaptations and figured that 11/22/63 was a good place to start, since I’m not a big horror fan, but I was wrong. This was an overwrought, bloated mess of a book. “Humans were built to look back; that’s why we have that swivel joint in our necks” Spoilers There are too many things going on in this […]
