I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

I can’t muster enough feelings for this to come up with a snappy title

I really enjoyed The Good Girl but was a bit “meh” on Don’t You Cry, my ambivalence towards Kubica’s Every Last Lie has sealed the deal for me- I’m just not a fan of her delivery. Our story is told from two perspectives: Clara Solberg in the present and her husband, Nick, in the past. While Clara is home with her week old son, Nick manages to wrap his car around a tree while driving his daughter home from ballet. Maisie, their daughter, walks away without a scratch but Nick […]

This is why I ignore invitations from people I haven’t spoken to in years…

I enjoyed Ruth Ware’s The Woman in Cabin 10 well enough but her debut, In a Dark, Dark Wood, is a better novel. Both stories involve a somewhat unstable female narrator who is taken out of her comfort zone and thrust into a series of psychological mind fucks. While very few books in the “unreliable female protagonist” genre have hit the high bar Gone Girl set Ware comes closer than most with In a Dark, Dark Wood.  Nora is a crime writer with a passion for jogging who is invited to […]

Getting Your Drink On

September 17, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

My husband and I are fairly confident wine drinkers. We took a trip to “Texas wine country” last year and received a rudimentary education in wine; we tend to lean toward Cabernets and Cab-Sauvignon in the $10 to $20 price range. Our preferred wines are bit ‘stronger’ than most of our social circle prefers so we tend to drink $4 bottles of Pinot Grigio regularly as well. Wine. All the Time is a good introduction course to wines for someone who has an inclination to […]

“In other words, after the laws of physics, everything else is opinion.”

Who doesn’t love Neil deGrasse Tyson? My first experience with this charismatic genius were his visits to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; between his television appearances and his Twitter presence he is at the forefront of making science cool again. “The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you. —NDT” This is exactly what it is billed as- important principles of Astrophysics written in an easily digestible manner that is ideal for people without a science background who don’t want to devote years to […]

Not Very Big Love

September 10, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I wanted to categorize this as Horror but decided to stick with Religion. This is a pretty intense story. If you are sensitive to stories involving sexual assault, particularly when children are involved, I would suggest to pass over it. There is a happy ending though since most of these fuckers received decades long prison sentences. Rebecca Musser was born into the FDLS church. She was the daughter of a second (or “Celestial”) wife and her father’s first wife physically and emotionally abused the children […]

Life Without Light

September 7, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Anna Lyndsey was a perfectly normal woman living in England; her face got a bit irritated after staring at a computer all day under fluorescent lights but she was managing. She left her job and moved in with her sympathetic boyfriend, Pete, hoping her situation was temporary. Unfortunately her light sensitivity only got worse and her condition made it difficult to get to doctors who might know how to help her. She slowly began barricading herself inside and resigning herself to a fate worse than […]
