I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

“A lot of women—and men—were waking up that morning asking whether America was still the country we had thought it was.”

When I placed What Happened on my TBR I was apprehensive. Did I want to read about the 2016 election so soon? But then I read Unbelievable by Katy Tur and was reinvigorated so I placed a hold at my library and, since I live in a Red State and went for the audio-book, I didn’t have to wait very long. As fate would have it I received my copy on Mueller Monday and listened on my commute on days that included the uplifting election results of November 7th so […]

“My diving bell becomes less oppressive, and my mind takes flight like a butterfly.”

November 10, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I heard about Jean-Dominique Bauby’s remarkable story in Anna Lyndsey’s memoir and decided to it check out. His memoir, written blink by blink, chronicles his thoughts and feelings about his tragic situation. Bauby suffered trauma to his brain stem during a stroke which trapped him inside of his head, a phenomenon known as “lock in syndrome.” I never like critiquing memoirs because they’re someone’s real story and it’s unfair to say that you didn’t like the plot of someone’s life. In particular it’s hard to criticize […]

Every time she’d find a minute That’s the time that they begin it Geekerelly, Geekerelly

I love a good retelling, for example I really enjoyed Alex, Approximately early this year, but Geekerella felt trapped by its fairy tale template. Danielle “Elle” Wittimer’s mother died when she was a toddler and her father, who remarried when she was a child, passed away while she was a teenager. Elle and her father were very close; in particular they bonded over an old Sci-Fi TV show called Starfield which is now undergoing a movie reboot. Her step mother is evil (a little too evil to be remotely realistic), […]

Family First

I think everyone has been looking back on the Bush presidency more favorable now, he can thank our Cheetoh in Chief for that one, but I’ve been a fan of Jenna Bush Hager since she joined The Today Show in 2009. She mentions that she was always really irritated by the press attention she received as First Daughter but, in an ironic turn, one of her best friends now is Today Anchor Savannah Guthrie. She has a gregarious personality and, as I constantly tell my husband, we could probably […]

Love Always, Charlie

November 10, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

You know how some weeks you need a breath of fresh air? Some weeks you need tried and true recycled air. “So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” Perks of Being a Wallflower is very special to me. Sure it’s a bit schmaltzy it places and a bit “get off my lawn” in others but overall this book is always a safe space where […]

“This is true love. You think this happens every day?”

October 28, 2017 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

First: I hit my goal! 120 books! I love The Princess Bride and I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve seen the movie so this was right up my alley. Cary Elwes, Wesley, put together his memories of shooting the beloved classic and intersperses his recollections with that of his cast mates. I listened to the audio-book and most of the actors read their own quotes which was magical. Cary details some of the pre-production, his audition as well as the decades long process […]
