I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

“Studies show that in general, optimists die ten years earlier than pessimists”

December 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“…studies show that in general, optimists die ten years earlier than pessimists.” “I find that hard to believe” “Of course you do, you’re an optimist. You have a misguided belief that things will go your way. You don’t see the dangers till it’s too late. Pessimists are more realistic. “That seems like a sad way to govern your life.” “It’s a safe way to govern your life.” Petula de Wilde is a pessimist out of survival; she keeps a binder full of stories about people […]

Perfect Reading Choice for Carpet Installation

December 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

On Thursday we had carpeting installed in our three bedrooms and since all the furniture from those three rooms were stacked in my living room and dining room I was confined to my kitchen from about 10:30am to 2:30pm. In this time I unwrapped 72 candy canes and made about 80 ounces of peppermint bark for my husband and I’s coworkers, hostess gifts for holiday parties and Christmas Day. I also made 2 dozen cookies for good measure. With about an hour left before I […]

Not Quite What I Was Expecting

December 26, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I was excited to read a book written by the first female Supreme Court Justice who not only broke the judicial glass ceiling but also sat on the bench for a quarter of a century deciding numerous cases that still impact our lives today. What I read instead was a very brief (and infuriatingly repetitive) recounting of the 250 year history of the Supreme Court. Now, a complete history of the Supreme Court would actually be fascinating to read but this isn’t even that complete […]

Even if you don’t like audio-books, you should really listen to the audio-book

December 17, 2017 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

I know a lot of Cannonballers listen to audio-books (particularly those that strive to hit double or triples) but even if you don’t you should make an exception for Izzard’s narration of his life story. It is no surprise a man who rose to fame as a stand up comedian has a talent for reading his own book out loud but it was really something else. First of all there is a lot of stuff in the audio-book that isn’t in the written copy (he […]

Ringing out 2017 with one more feminist work

December 13, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I have read numerous works this year trying to understand the world we live in today. Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud falls squarely in the middle of the pack of a year loaded with politically charged books like What Happened?, On Tyranny and Unbelievable as well as more feminist charged books like We Should All Be Feminists and Hunger.  “She should be assertive but not bossy, feminine but not prissy, experienced but not condescending, fashionable but not superficial, forceful but not shrill. Put simply: she should be masculine, but not too masculine; feminine, but […]

Star Wars and a Happy New Year

December 13, 2017 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

Rainbow Rowell is a CBR treasure so naturally I had to seek out Almost Midnight, two short stories published together in the UK, by cleverly giving it to my sister for her birthday and then borrowing it. I had already read “Kindred Spirits” but I had not read “Midnights” before. I have already read and reviewed “Kindred Spirits “ but it was fun to reread it leading up to the release of Last Jedi this Friday. My husband and I bought tickets a month ago but then he was unexpectedly sent […]
