I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

“What you learn today, for no reason at all, will help you discover all the wonderful secrets of tomorrow.”

My father is an excellent book narrator. He was in theater in high school and college (because quote “that’s where all the babes were.”) so he does all the voices and all the sounds. He was the ideal father for a bedtime story and my nephews are currently reaping the benefits of his talents. When we were younger my dad would also play rhyming games with my sister and me, driving our mother crazy, and even now he is always there with a pun. All of […]

“Barack Obama’s election was a triumph of hope. But his presidency was a triumph of persistence.”

February 21, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I think most people with even a casual knowledge of Obama are familiar with speech writer and Twitter gem Jon Favreau but he was not alone in shaping the words our Commander in Chief delivered in the early years of his presidency. Favreau had a group of people working with him at the White House including David Litt, who stayed on after Favreau left. Yale grad Litt parlayed a college student passion for a candidate into a career in the White House. His memoir is a […]

50 Shades of Grey is to Twilight as Kill the Boyband is to One Direction FanFic

February 21, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Y’all, I knew this was going to be bad. The reviews are a mixed bag but the overall consensus was it was thinly veiled One Direction fan fiction and I’m not a fan fiction fan. I didn’t like Carry On for similar reasons but I was looking for a popcorn book to get me through my lunch breaks this week so… in I went. Our narrator is nameless or I forgot it because she constantly uses fake names like Sloane Peterson and Diane Court. I […]

“Know first who you are and then adore yourself accordingly.”

February 17, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Lou Clark is back in our lives and it is glorious.! My wonderful husband took me to Barnes & Nobel after our Valentine’s dinner and told me what every girl wants to hear, “Pick a book out, and don’t use your Christmas gift card.” Swoon. A bit spoilery. Do we really need a trilogy of Louisa Clark novels? Probably not, but she is clearly a beloved character (/ money maker) and Jojo Moyes is trying to give her fans what they want (/ buy a […]

Pretty fucked up

February 17, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I downloaded the novella Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes from Overdrive a few weeks ago waiting for its follow up novel Pretty Girls. At the time I found it to be a bit unnecessary; having read the novel I find it completely unnecessary. “You couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing about the missing teenage girl. Sixteen years old. White. Middle class. Very pretty. No one ever seemed quite as outraged when an ugly woman went missing.” First of all, I started this as an audio-book and just could not […]

Is there anything more San Francisco than sourdough bread and tech start ups?

February 17, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I wasn’t crazy about Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore when I read it along with what seemed like half of CBR6. My biggest complaint was the magical realism but the longer I stay in the Cannonball community the more open to new genres I become. Plus Yesknopemaybe read and reviewed Sourdough at the start of CBR10 and prefaced her review by stating she despised Penumbra so if I haven’t stretched my tastes as much as I thought what could it hurt? Sourdough is a quirky story about a software engineer named Lois […]
