I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

‘Good morning pretty lady, are you pregnant?’

March 12, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

So the last two books I read were disappointing for different reasons but, despite its bleak subject matter, Born Survivors lifted me out of my slump. Born Survivors was a well written, sad but uplifting, story about three women who beat the odds during during the Holocaust. Priska, Rachel, and Anka were pregnant Jewish women who were sent to Auschwitz near the tail end of World War II. Their stories were amazing, they were so full of hope despite their circumstances and overall this is a story about survival […]

Sally’s Ride

March 12, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“During her sixty-one years on the planet – minus 343 hours, 47 minutes, 32 seconds in space – she joined, then helped lead, the boldest steps yet taken to explore and protect the big blue marble that is our home.” Even if I woke up tomorrow morning and was 60 pounds lighter with a complete understanding of astrophysics I would not want to go to space. While I have no desires to go to space it has nothing to do with not being allowed (except […]

A Gentleman in MoscNO

March 12, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

A Gentleman in Moscow is one of those books that you feel like you should read, one of those future classics that everyone will say they loved even though they hated it or didn’t finish it. It was just so long and bloated. My eyes glazed over one too many times. Did I even read this? What did I even spend the last 5 days doing… So Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol Hotel by the Bolsheviks for being an […]

“Thanks to Harvey, the year I died had become the year I lived”

March 5, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I really wanted to like this one, I loved Dumplin’ and enjoyed last year’s Ramona Blue, but Murphy’s debut novel was lackluster. Going back in time with an author is always tricky since most people improve with age & time so I will try to be kind. Sixteen year old Alice was diagnosed with leukemia about a month after discovering her mother was having an affair. Alice was skipping school with her soon to be ex-boyfriend, Luke, and discovers her mom nearly naked with another man. Luke […]

Orphan Train without the train

February 28, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Before We Were Yours topped several “Best Of” lists in 2017 including its win for Best Historical Fiction in the Goodreads Choice Award. I lucked out and found a copy at my library on its “Too Hot To Hold” shelf. This was a good book but not a great book; it had a slow start but picked up towards the end. It’s pretty clear how the past and present are connected but it’s a well written story. “A woman’s past need not predict her future. She can dance […]

“Being a good boss means hiring talented people and then getting out of their way.”

February 28, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I continued my re-visiting of celebrity memoirs in audio-book form by listening to Tina Fey’s Bossypants and it was a delight. Tina Fey is one of my favorite humans and 30 Rock is one of my favorite TV shows. As I write this my husband and I are watching the series finale following what was most likely our 15th or 16th re-watch.* We probably couldn’t go a whole day without dropping at least one 30 Rock line.** I seriously considered having this whole review just being 30 Rock gifs but I […]
