I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

“I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen.”

Jacob Portman grew up hearing fantastic stories from his grandfather, Abe, about an orphanage in Wales where he was raised during World War 2 after he escaped Nazi occupied Poland. The orphanage was full of kids with special talents that were supported by photos that Jacob’s grandfather had held onto after coming to America when the War ended. As Jacob grows up, he gets teased for believing in fairy tales and begins to realize the stories and photos are fake which makes him angry and […]

I hope Brian got an A on his high school history paper

HOW DO YOU MESS UP PIRATES AND THOMAS JEFFERSON??? First things first. I did not realize this was written by one of the Fox & Friends guys until after I paid money for it and got about a third the way through. The overall tone of the book is a bit racist and the writing could generously be called sophomoric. The overall gist of the book and war is that American merchant ships were being attacked by pirates whenever they traveled towards the Barbary Coast. These pirates, whose […]

“Things were far better watched from a distance….When you watched too closely, you saw things you didn’t want to see.” Three years ago Pleasant Court resident Essie Walker left her daughter at the park and went home. She quickly came to her senses, retrieved her daughter and sought treatment for postpartum depression. In the present day Essie has convinced her husband to have another child, Polly, and she is doing much better this time around. When a single woman with no children, an oddity in […]

The Gold Standard

May 4, 2018 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

“Friends see most of each other’s flaws. Spouses see every awful last bit.” I read Gone Girl for CBR6 and have been comparing psychological thrillers to it since. I was beginning to wonder if I had made up how remarkable Gillian Flynn’s bone chilling drama was and holding lesser novels to an impossible standard. I wasn’t. I remained impressed with Flynn’s psychological mind fuck of a novel about a dysfunctional married couple whose secrets are exposed when the wife goes missing. Nick Dunne and his wife, Amy […]

“Look me in the face, hold my gaze. And call me by your name.”

May 4, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Call Me By Your Name was one of two 2018 Best Picture nominees that I didn’t see until after the Academy Awards (the other was The Post) but damn did it rip me apart. I was perfectly happy to see Shape of Water win over Three Billboards but CMBYN was so beautiful and Timothée Chalamet was robbed so in my heart of hearts I will always been disappointed it only received one Oscar. That Oscar went deservedly to James Ivory who adapted André Aciman’s novel of the same name. I had every intention of […]

“Sometimes there just aren’t enough words to fill the crack in your heart.”

April 30, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

When Emmy and Oliver were seven Oliver’s father picked him up from school for a three day weekend. When Oliver wasn’t in school the following school day it became clear that something awful had happened. Oliver’s disappearance rocked their Californian suburban neighborhood and, ten years later, his reappearance is equal shattering. While Oliver was missing Emmy grew up under the weight of her childhood best friend’s absence; her parents’ fear of losing their daughter manifested itself into extreme over protectiveness and led to quiet rebellion […]
