I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Coming Home by Amy Dickinson

February 3, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I picked Amy Dickinson’s memoir based solely on its title and cover page but realized towards the end I had a vague idea of who she was thanks to her viral response to a homophobic father in 2013. Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things is not a book full of “Ask Amy” advice but rather a book about one woman’s journey through life’s personal hardships written by a woman who just so happens to be renowned for her ability to help people. Amy isn’t perfect. To be […]

Black Klansman: Race, Hate, and the Undercover Investigation of a Lifetime by Ron Stallworth

February 3, 2019 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Ron Stallworth’s memoir, BlacKkKlansman, about his time as a member of the Ku Klux Klan, has received a lot of attention in the last year thanks to the Academy Award nominated Spike Lee film of the same name. I was waiting to write this review until I had watched the film and now I wish I hadn’t because I am so tempted to just compare the two. All I will say is the film is very entertaining and well acted but it takes a lot of […]

THEY DON’T EAT THE DOG

The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin

January 25, 2019 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

When a blizzard grounds all commercial flights taking off in Salt Lake City two strangers, Dr. Ben Payne and Ashley Knox (whose wedding is in two days), decide to split the fare for a private charter plane into Denver. Unfortunately the pilot, Grover, suffers a heart attack and crashes into the mountains; while he is able to adjust for some impact before he dies the emergency beacon is still destroyed on impact. Oh and they didn’t file a flight plan or tell anyone they were […]

Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by Lydia Kang and Nate Pedersen

January 25, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything reminded me a lot of Jennifer Wright’s Get Well Soon; they both tackle the history of early medicine and make you happy to live in the modern age. Quackery is brief, each chapter is essentially an extra long Cracked article, but Kang provides a lot of information in a short amount of time and if any topic really intrigues you it would probably be easy to discover a more in depth article on the Internet. Sure, we all know […]

“There’s no shame in devoting yourself to another person, as long as he devotes himself to you in return.”

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

January 25, 2019 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

Last year I unexpectedly enjoyed Pride and Prejudice during Cannonball Bingo; I decided to read Curtis Sittenfeld’s modern retelling because I have enjoyed several other books she’s written. Unfortunately this adaptation is often times hampered by its premise and would have been better served not trying to fit so tightly into an Austen shaped boxed. While I usually find myself screaming at film adaptations that stray too far from the original I actually wish Sittenfeld been a bit looser with her translation like Clueless, another Austen retelling,or She’s the Man, […]

This Will Only Hurt a Little by Busy Philipps

January 25, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Busy’s career has mostly flown under my radar. I was 11 when Freaks and Geeks premiered so I didn’t watch it until it came on Netflix years later; I’ve also never seen a single episode of Dawson’s Creek or Cougar Town, her other big roles.  I had no idea she was on ER because I stopped watching around the time Grey’s Anatomy came out and that was before Busy had her arc. I essentially know Busy as “Michelle William’s best friend” which is probably not how she wants to be remembered. One […]
