I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman

February 20, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Something in the Water got a lot of attention last year; Steadman’s debut novel was nominated for two Goodreads Choice awards and was Reese Witherspoon’s June Book Club read. I borrowed this one from the library based on these facts so I didn’t know much about the novel going in which is sometimes best with thrillers. “I notice my sudden jump in logic. From making a mistake to actively committing a crime. Just like that. I wonder if that’s how it starts with a lot of […]

The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten

February 19, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

After rating All the Bright Places 5 Stars on Goodreads The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B popped up in my recommendations. While it is an enjoyable read that also tackles mental health through an adolescent protagonist it pales in comparison; especially read is such close succession. Either way I think it is great that there are so many books geared towards teens that shed light on mental health issues and help to lift the stigma of asking for help. Adam suffers from severe obsessive compulsive disorder and is part […]

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

February 19, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

As I said in last night’s reviews, I have been listening to a lot of YA audiobooks on my commute and next up is All the Bright Places which nearly brought me to tears as I took my exit Friday morning. Trigger warning for suicide. “It’s my experience that people are a lot more sympathetic if they can see you hurting, and for the millionth time in my life I wish for measles or smallpox or some other easily understood disease just to make it easier on […]

“Silence is the only privacy.”

All Rights Reserved (Word$, 1) by Gregory Scott Katsoulis

February 18, 2019 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

All Rights Reserved is a really excellent introduction to what could be a really great YA dystopian series; Katsoulis balances the typical “world building” one has to do with any futuristic novel, especially one they hope to make into a series, with a solid standalone story line. I already have the second novel on my library holds list. “Every word is Trademarked™, Restricted® or Copyrighted©. The companies and people who own these rights let people use them, but once you turn fifteen, you have to pay.” Speth […]

“But how can I send my heart to him when he’s just said, in no uncertain terms, that he doesn’t speak its language?”

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

February 18, 2019 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

I started a new job on the 28th and it is changing the trajectory of my Cannonba11 Read already. Lunch is an incredibly social time unlike my old gig where lunch was always guaranteed 45 minutes of reading time. I also stare at a computer screen for most of the day, unlike before, so I keep delaying writing my reviews. But I love you guys and have missed this little community so I’m trying to get back into the swing of things! I have been […]

“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.”

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows

February 3, 2019 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an absolutely charming novel set in 1946 England about the aftermath of World War II. The story is told exclusively through written correspondence between author Juliet Ashton, her editor Sidney, the various members of the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society and a few other minor characters. Due to the popularity of the Netflix movie of the same name I have been on the wait list for both the audiobook and the hard copy of Guernsey for about 6 […]
