I’ve been really anxious and sad when I think of all the great book series (Is there a plural of that? Serieses?) that I started and never completed, all the many stories that I hoped to pick up again and left off after a second, third, fourth book was published. The struggle is real. At the end of last year, I decided to complete one of them: Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles. I previously read and enjoyed Cinder and Scarlet, then dropped the ball on Cress. […]
“Girls were meant to paint screens, sob out ballads, and play the pianoforte, not see through the masks of polite society…”
The Dark Days Club combines regency era manners with supernatural action. Lady Helen starts the book preparing to be presented to the Queen, start her season, and marry well. She never suspects that soon she will be training to fight demons and save innocent souls. Soon, she is bending the rules of the time and risking the ruin of her reputation. It’s pretty good (Even though it is very exposition-heavy), and I’m interested in seeing where the series goes next. You can read my review […]
“Whole lot easier staying in and writing yourself brave instead of going out and BEING brave, is all I’m saying…”
Scarlett Epstein is about a smart, sarcastic girl whose social life is mostly writing fanfics for the TV show Lycanthrope High. When the show is cancelled, her group of fans has to find a new subject. Scarlett decides to write new fics based on kids at her school, namely her feelings about her childhood friend Gideon who seems to be turning into a popular jerk. I really liked Scarlett and her snarkiness and she’s easy to relate to, though sometimes frustrating. It’s a really fun […]
A dash of western, a few pinches of fantasy, toss in a few cannibals, and stir till frothy
Revenge & the Wild is set in Rogue City, a town filled with magic and magical creatures. Humans live alongside vampires, elves, leprechauns, and more. They don’t always get along, but they have a wary peace. The native people cast a spell to protect the humans, but the spell has been fading. Worse, if magic dies so do the magical creatures. Westie’s father Nigel created a machine to generate magic from gold. In order to get gold, he needs an investor. The Fairfields, a family […]

Calvin is diagnosed with schizophrenia after his dead stuffed tiger suddenly starts talking to him again. In order to cure himself, he decides to trek across the frozen Lake Erie in order to meet with Bill Watterson and convince him to make one more Calvin & Hobbes comic. “I hate seeing fat girls on TV or in movies, because the only way the world seems to be okay with putting a fat person on camera is if they’re miserable with themselves or if they’re the jolly best friend. Well, I’m neither of those things. ..”
I liked the message behind Dumplin’ a lot. It’s great to see a body positive YA protagonist with sass. I also have a weird obsession with beauty pageants. It seems like this should have been the perfect book for me…but it fell a bit short. The pageant really isn’t a huge part of the story. It’s more about relationships: Will and her mother, Will and her coworker/kinda boyfriend Bo, Will and best friend Ellen. The story isn’t bad by any means, but I really wanted […]
