We’ve reached the grand finale of the Reckoners trilogy, and I’ve actually read them all! Our Reckoners*, led by David and his new girlfriend Megan, are still fighting the good fight against the evil Epics. It’s harder than ever after their former leader, Prof, went to the Dark Side. Now, he is an Epic who goes by Limelight. Thankfully, the Reckoners have a plan to get their old friend back. *Reckoners are regular people who fight Epics** **Epics are people who were given powers after […]
“And they burned waxily ever after…”
Save Wax is about a town called Paraffin, Vermont, and how some of its residents were murdered and replaced with wax figures. It’s also really, really funny. One of the residents, Poppy, was disgraced on a nationally televised talent show. She throws herself into serving as president of the drama club, the Giddy Committee. After her biggest bully pulls yet another prank on her, Poppy visits the local candle factory to get to the bottom of things. She ends up meeting a mysterious old woman […]
“Like Digby himself said: The truth is almost always disappointing…”
Save Trouble Is a Friend of Mine is a mystery with an overachieving girl, Zoe, and a boy who is a young version of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock. Digby is brusque and tactless, he even looks like Cumberbatch. He just shows up outside her door one day, and next thing you know, they are searching for a missing girl and investigating the possible cult across the street from her new house. You can read my full review here.
“But some men should be marked. I’m fit for that task. And I don’t feel bad…”
The Female of the Species is another fantastic book from the fantastic Mindy McGinnis. She wrote the dystopian Not a Drop to Drink (Also its follow-up In a Handful of Dust, which I haven’t read yet) and the historical A Madness So Discreet. Her latest book is completely different, a contemporary novel. Alex’s older sister Anna was kidnapped and brutally murdered. They didn’t punish the man who killed her. Alex took it upon herself to punish him. Nobody knows it was her. There is a […]
“Jell-O monkeys!” she squealed, and wiggled her fingers in front of her mouth.
Save I was on an upbeat, fun and funny kick over the summer (Which was broken a bit by the book that follows this), and this seemed like the perfect way to keep it up. It’s about a girl named Beatrice who likes math and is a bit of a control freak. She isn’t popular and everyone knows her as Math Girl. Beatrice thinks the new school year will be different for her and her friends. For instance, she finally has a boyfriend. Jesse ends […]
I-I’m a-a-already dead
I LOVE Rob Thomas’ adaptation of iZombie. It’s fantastic, one of my favorite shows. Of course, the show made me curious about the comic series of the same name. Spoiler alert: I like the show better. There isn’t actually a lot of common ground between the two aside from a shared title and a zombie protagonist who eats brains and uses them to see the person’s memories. The books did still have their own weird charm. For a full run down of the differences, you […]
