G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

Much lizard, so destruction

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

November 14, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Kaiju Preservation Society is about a masters graduate who loses his job and falls into doing menial labour (via a loosely-rebranded Uber Eats stand in) when the pandemic hits.  His job brings him back into the orbit of an old friend from college, who hits him up with the mysterious job opportunity of a lifetime. After preparing his will and getting shot full of vaccines, he’s whisked away to a world of nightmares to, in his words, ‘life heavy things’.  It turns out he’s […]

Adventures in Bedtime Reading

How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

November 3, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

My quest for a book that appeals to both my six year old son and me continues, with the latest attempt being the first in the How To Train Your Dragon series. You may think you know this story if you’ve seen the Dreamworks movie and sequels, but I can assure you: you don’t! The novel strikes an entirely different tone and the story told within the  differs in many respects. Yes, our narrator and central character is Hiccup, future heir to the viking clan […]

Destiny or destruction?

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

October 29, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Soulmate tells the tale of married couple who have recently relocated to a cliffside home overlooking the pacific ocean. There is only one drawback to their panoramic view: the drop. The drop is where people who reach the end of their tether decide to end their lives. Gabe has become a local celebrity by intervening and helping these lost souls find the will to go on, and his wife, Pippa, couldn’t be prouder. Together with their two children, they seem to have an idyllic […]

Unsatisfying

Woman, Eating: A Literary Vampire Novel by Claire Kohda

October 12, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Woman, Eating was my attempt at getting into the Halloween spirit a bit early. A book about a vampire trying to exist alongside humans without hunting them? As a hardcore Buffy fan, I was intrigued. Lydia is coming of age as a woman in London, alone for the first time. She was born a vampire and has never consumed human blood, her vampire mother raising her exclusively on pigs’ blood. Not just that, her mother also fed her with a liberal dose of daily shame […]

A twisting tale

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

October 12, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I chose to listen to Piranesi purely because it was the 2021 Audie Awards Audiobook of the Year, and was read by none other than the velvet voiced Chiwetel Ejiofor. Piranesi is about a man navigating his life living in a maze, and likewise presents itself to the reader as a puzzle that must be navigated. I’ve seen this book described as ‘beautiful and profound’, ‘spectacularly moving’, ‘stunning’, and ‘a masterful work of weird fiction’. I’m glad to see that it has had the effect […]

Let it go

Good, Great, Perfect by Dr Rebecca Ray

October 12, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I read a Tweet recently that said: “Have you felt perpetually guilty every day of your life since you were 6, or are you normal?” Never have I felt so seen. I am a goal-setting, anxiety-having, Type-A, perfectionist. It’s something that was bred into me and carefully cultivated over too many decades to deny. It’s part of my DNA. Or, is it? This free audiobook was suggested to me by Audible (am I so transparent??) and so I gave it a go. Dr Rebecca Ray […]
