G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

Caesar's Wife's Reviews:

Judgy-wudgy was a bear…

No Judgement by Lauren Oyler

May 26, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Is it possible to read one-too-many feminist millennial essay collections? If so, I think I’ve reached that point. Through this collection of essays, I learned a bit about Oyler. I learned about her chequered dating history, her life as an expat in Berlin, her experimentation with drugs, her meandering views on autofiction, and her thoughts on how people ‘gamify’ Goodreads reviews. There were elements I liked. I appreciated the critique of criticism itself, the pretentious life-abroad anecdotes, and her takedown of TEDx-style vulnerability culture. She’s […]

Sunrise of the Weeping

Sunrise on the Reaping (The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins

May 26, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

I took a much-needed break from my brief—yet frustrating—foray into the romantasy genre to return to my comfort zone: dystopia. And Sunrise on the Reaping did not disappoint. The book begins back in the bleak, coal-dust-covered District 12, as Haymitch Abernathy prepares for the reaping of the Quarter Quell. It’s been 25 years since the Dark Days, and what better way to mark the anniversary of the end of slaughter than we MORE slaughter? Specifically, by sending double the number of children to their deaths […]

Face your demon

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

March 23, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I recently finished Demon Copperhead—or more accurately, listened to it on audiobook—and it completely captured me. At over 30 hours long, it ticked my new criteria for audiobooks: a truly epic runtime that gives me a good return on my Audible credit. I tend to listen while I’m out running or commuting, and choosing a long, immersive story like this one keeps me motivated to keep getting out and doing things. It becomes part of the rhythm of life.   Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead, inspired […]

Dragon Player

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

March 1, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Picture this: The rain is pouring, you’re shivering, terrified, staring down into a dark abyss. You’re halfway across a narrow castle parapet—the first of many deadly tests you’ll need to survive over the next year. You’re smaller than all the other wannabe cadets. Weaker. But none of that matters. Your mother, the general in charge of your nation’s army, has decreed that you must join the Riders Quadrant. And so, you must. All your life, you’d been training to be a Scribe, studying ancient tomes […]

Hook, Line and Thinker

All Fours by Miranda July

February 26, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

If you’ve been traipsing around the ‘new book recommendations’ corners of the internet that I frequent, you’ve likely already read the (very effective) hook for July’s latest novel: “A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, checks into a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in an entirely different journey.” It certainly was effective on me, and I dived into this novel with reckless abandon. It’s […]

What if…? Aussie edition.

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty

January 7, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

How is it that I, a middle-class, middle-aged white Australian woman, have never read a Moriarty book before now?! I was failing all sorts of stereotypes but NO MORE. I have joined my clan. I have Moriartied. I have no regrets. ‘Here One Moment’ starts with a great What If…? premise. What if, on a frustratingly delayed domestic flight from Hobart to Sydney, an elderly woman suddenly rises from her seat, points at you, and says ‘I expect you to die by [cause] at [age]’. […]
