G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

Caesar's Wife's Reviews:

Dreamcatcher meets Lord of the Flies

The Troop by Nick Cutter

June 7, 2019 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I think I’ll go and eat worms! Big fat juicy ones. Eensie weensy squeensy ones. See how they wiggle and squirm! I will never again see that rhyme the same way. This book is bloody disgusting. A foul, body-horror, visceral experience usually reserved for John Carpenter movies. I was utterly unprepared to be so repulsed by the mere written word. The story centers on a troop of five 14 year old boy-scouts, their honourable scoutmaster, and a (very very […]

13 thoughts while reading 13 Reasons Why

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

May 27, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

*Trigger warning* This post will discuss suicide, as this is the topic at the heart of 13 Reasons Why. I’ve seen both seasons of 13 Reasons Why on Netflix, so I thought I knew what I was getting into when I picked this novel up from the communal library at work. I was not prepared for how it would affect me. In short: I do not recommend it. Here is a play-by-play of the 13 thoughts I noted down while reading 13 Reasons Why: Thank […]

Inspiring a case of the midnight giggles

Calypso by David Sedaris

May 19, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

This isn’t so much a review, as a love letter to the mind of David Sedaris. You’ll just have to bear with me here… I first heard David Sedaris on the This American Life podcast. His storytelling was always peppered with humour, wry, and occasionally intensely personal. But what captured me most was his voice. It was so mild… verging on prim at times. Which makes his storytelling all the more engaging, as his voice rarely matches his topics. David Sedaris’ delightfully dark and twisted […]

Hits all the high notes, and yet…

The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey

May 5, 2019 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

This novel is a modern-day retelling of the story of Pandora (as the literal translation of the title ‘The Girl With All The Gifts’). A plague of fungus has wiped out most of humanity, hijacking the bodies of the infected and using them to spread the downfall further. Yet through the hopelessness emerges a group of children who have retained their humanity and intelligence, despite the infection. It is hypothesised that they may hold hope for the cure. They live wild on the streets of […]

How do you tell the story of the end of the world?

Station 11 by Emily St John Mandel

April 28, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I’m no novice to the world of apocalypse fiction, having cut my teeth on Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ when I was 13 years old. The virus apocalypse, the zombie apocalypse… honestly, it’s my favourite genre. So when I kept seeing Station 11 recommended as a stand-out apocalyptic fiction book, written by a woman no less, I was eager to dive in. I’d describe this novel as softly written… lingering like a nice mellow merlot. There is no cataclysmic event (Without Warning). No grand worldwide scale […]

So… apparently I’m not a fan of ‘chic lit’…

The Mummy Bloggers by Holly Wainwright

April 7, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Mummy Bloggers is a short, easy read and ultimately pointless novel that examines a few months in the life of three fictional Australian’s bloggers: The Stylish Mumma: an Instagram Queen B of perfection. Toned abs, gorgeous children, fabulous home. The Working Mum: an exhausted but driven mum doing the best she can to juggle her responsibilities and share her story. The Green Diva: a keyboard warrior who encourages an ethical and ecologically sustainable way of parenting. Those are the kindest descriptors for these three […]
