G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

The Organ Trail

The Hunger by Alma Katsu

February 7, 2020 by Caesar's Wife 3 Comments

I got sucked into buying this book by the pull quote from Stephen King, but it did not even slightly live up to the hype. The Hunger is a ‘historical fiction’ retelling of the doomed journey of The Donner Party across wild unsettled America which, as is widely known, ended in survival cannibalism. There is so much to tell in that story alone. Who were these people? Who crumbled first and why? How were those who were sacrificed to feed the others chosen? What happened […]

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

January 23, 2020 by Caesar's Wife 3 Comments

Let me start by saying: this is a genuinely wonderful book which you should immediately procure. Then make yourself some strong sweet tea, curl up in your favourite reading spot, and gift yourself a few hours to fall in love with it. I guarantee: it’s worth your time. Where the Crawdads Sing is the debut novel of Delia Owens who, prior to its publication, had published only non-fiction books. It tells the story of Kya, who local townspeople shun and jeer, calling her the ‘Marsh […]

Shades of Gray

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green

January 14, 2020 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

One Will Grayson is a teenage boy trapped under his self-imposed ‘rules’ of aloofness and the considerable shadow of his flamboyant and outspoken best friend. The other Will Grayson is a teenage boy trapped under the suffocating shadow of his clinical depression and closeted sexual orientation. Both are surviving but neither are thriving. Neither are fully engaging with life, love, and all the complexities that come with trusting people, showing vulnerability, or being authentic. Through a series of unfortunate and unlikely events, these two Will […]

Harrowing

Bird Box by Josh Malerman

January 1, 2020 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Technically, I finished this book about an hour before the calendar ticked over to 2020, but it still counts to CBR12! The fact that I was reading that late on NYE gives you an insight into the intensity of this book. I simply couldn’t put it down as it reached it’s crescendo. Bird Box is a psychological paranormal thriller about the end of the world, told through the eyes and ears of Malorie – a women holding it all together for the sake of those […]

Alternate Title: The Boomer Investor

The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham

December 19, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I don’t know anything about the share market. Nada. As soon as the S&P stats appear on the nightly news, my eyes glaze over and I’m turned off. So I thought I should do something about that. I’m a women in my 30s with a family to support, after all. I figured it was time to educate myself. I did some cursory googling, asking myself “WWWBD (What Would Warren Buffet Do)?”, before buying The Intelligent Investor. It seemed like a good place to start. And […]

A Tarnished Reflection

Moon by James Herbert

December 8, 2019 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

When my uncle passed away a few years ago, he left behind a wealth of novels to read. In the days that followed his funeral, his friends and family were welcomed into his home and encouraged to seize a momento.  My uncle and I have always shared a love of the macabre, so I was not surprised to find an impressive collection of horror novels on his jumbled shelves. One of the titles I picked up through the fog of grief that day was Moon. […]
