G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

Mum’s the Bird

Malorie by Josh Malerman

December 27, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

Malorie is the sequel to Bird Box, which I had the pleasure of reading/reviewing in January 2020. Spoiler Alert: Bird Box ends with the discovery of a seemingly successful safe haven, a school for the blind, which is reached by Malorie and her two six-year old children after a harrowing trip down a river, blind. This book continues her plight, instead this time it’s a blind train rather than a blind boat. But I’m skipping ahead. In the opening pages of Malorie, we learn that […]

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

December 19, 2021 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Having read my 4yo son the first Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind graphic novel this year, I thought it was time to advance to an all-words-no-pictures book and see if he could handle it. So I scoured my shelves in search of something fitting. Harry Potter? Hmmm not quite yet. The Witches? Bit scary. Alice in Wonderland? Too contrived. Then I came upon an old faded copy of the Wizard of Oz that held much promise. Of course this story is extremely well-known, […]

Animorphs Assemble!

Animorphs Graphic Novel Book One: The Invasion by K. A. Applegate & Michael Grant

December 19, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

I could write a thesis on the importance and relevance of the Animorphs series for tweens, but it’s been done better many times by others. I read this series in primary school and continued throughout high school, until it was pointed out to me rather harshly that I was ‘too old’ to still be reading the series… So here I am, mid-thirties, thumbing my nose to that judgment and gleefully re-reading the beloved series, this time in graphic novel form. Part of me was curious […]

The Mend is Nigh

Severance by Ling Ma

December 19, 2021 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Ling Ma has crafted a beautiful pandemic tale in Severance, akin to Station Eleven. The tale of humanity’s downfall is told through the eyes of Candace Chen, a disconnected millennial living her days in Manhattan with her directionless boyfriend, her soul crushing corporate job, and the unresolved feelings associated with the death of her parents. She is on a coffee/work/sleep/rinse/repeat schedule, not staying still but also not moving forwards… as society collapses around her. The end of the world this time is not via a […]

Small unsatisfying bytes of sci-fi

Cosmogramma by Courttia Newland

December 9, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

‘Cosmogramma’ is a collection of speculative short stories of a science fiction bent. Robots, AI, space travel… with a little sprinkling of mermaids and zombies and superhumans to keep things interesting. Given it’s a collection of short stories, I’ll do my best to review each briefly and then give my overall impression: Percipi A dispassionate retelling of a robopocalyse. Engaging, well told, and very believable. I wish that this short story was fleshed out and just the whole novel, honestly. Reminded me of ‘animatrix’.  Five […]

Feminist Fluff

Work Strife Balance by Mia Freedman

November 22, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

‘Work Strife Balance’ is allegedly the book that Freedman’s husband and co-owner of her media empire has been urging her to write ‘for years’. Within, she has attempted to pen her feminist manifesto: decrying the concept of ‘balance’, allegedly exposing all about her chaotic life, and giving sage wisdom to young impressionable women and men. For anyone familiar with Freedman’s network of websites and podcasts aimed at women and enlightened men, this book is largely a retread of all her other work. I’m disappointed to […]
