G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

A Potted History

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling

August 4, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

It seems ridiculous to pen a review of the first Harry Potter novel. This is a world-wide smash hit, everyone has read it (some numerous times – myself included). Everyone knows the story of The Boy Who Lived, and his tumultuous first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. So why am I reviewing this book? Because my family, including my husband, five year old son, and two corgis drove 3,550km across Australia to play in the snow at the Snowy Mountains. We chunked […]

Fantasy Matters

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

August 4, 2022 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Elantris is a (blessedly) stand alone fantasy novel, centering around the mystery of the fall of Elantris and three main characters, Prince Raoden, Princess Sarene and Gyorn Hrathen. Elantris itself is a walled city, once grand in scale and filled with people who travelled from neighbouring lands after having undergone a seemingly random mythical transformation to become Elantrians. Elantrians were white haired and silver skinned god-like beings who could do magic based on mystical runes. Ten years ago; however, all Elantrians (and the city itself) […]

How To Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question by Michael Shur

August 3, 2022 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Michael Shur, creator of (among other comedies shows) The Good Place, has applied the research he performed to write that series and laid it out, in layperson’s terms, in How To Be Perfect. This non-fiction book, which I digested in Audiobook format read by Shur himself, was an informative (if surface-level) look into the world of ethical and moral philosophy. It’s peppered with funny asides and illustrative anecdotes throughout, with quotes by notable philosophers read by members of The Good Place cast. Shur sets out […]

Aliens: Phalanx by Scott Sigler

June 23, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Okay, so we can all agree that Alien is amazing, right? That the xenomorph is a genuinely terrifying creation and something that we’ve all had at least one nightmare about, yes? Good. So imagine you are one of the few human settlements left surviving on a land razed by xenomorphs (or ‘demons’, as you know them to be). You live like insects inside a mountainside, clinging to life by the thinnest of margins. Your settlement sends it’s young and able-bodied to trade essential items with […]

Aussie Comedian Memoir Double Feature

Challenge Accepted by Celeste Barber

June 23, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I just finished reading two memoirs by Australian comedians concurrently: Hannah Gadsby’s ‘Ten Steps to Nanette’ and ‘Challenge Accepted’ by Celeste Barber. The parallels and differences between each were, in a word, fascinating, so that is why I am reviewing both together. Gadsby’s tone throughout was dire. She recounted the damage and traumas she’s endured over a lifetime – from her sexuality, her neural diversity, her physical appearance, and her family relationships… she has been through the ringer. She is diagnosed as autistic, has been […]

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

June 23, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Project Hail Mary is a science fiction novel about, you guessed it, the end of the world. The novel begins with a man in a room, hooked up to a machine. He is disoriented and unaware of his own name. Through scientific discovery – trial and error – he discovers that he is on a spaceship and is the lone survivor of a mission to another star system. Gradually, his memory returns and he recalls that is name is Ryland Grace and he is on […]
