G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

Diabolical

Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

January 24, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

If you read any reviews for Hench, you’ll quickly see the Amazon Prime series ‘The Boys’ called up, and it’s an apt comparison. Both The Boys and Hench share an attitude towards superheros that is distinctly… anti-Marvel. Hench takes place in a world that idolises superheros and leaves little room for critique of their methods. Property damage, destruction, injured innocent bystanders… These realities of living alongside a superpowered cohort are swept under the proverbial rug so that heros are infallible and worshipped by all. Until […]

Foul foe, or foul play?

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay

January 17, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

A Head Full of Ghosts is a possession/exorcism tale… or is it? The eldest teenage daughter of the Barrett family, Marjorie, is not quite herself. She’s telling horrible stories, hearing voices, and vomiting green goo. She’s terrifying her little sister Merry with tales both true and imagined. Although she’s taking her prescription medication and dutifully attending her various medical appointments, her condition does not appear to be improving. Her parents or – more specifically – her father, reach out to a local catholic priest, Father […]

Hairy Tail

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

January 16, 2023 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

There’s something so simple and comforting at the heart of Fairy Tale. No psychological terror. No sexual assault. No prequels or lore.  No tween orgies. It’s the story of an old man, a boy, a dog, and an incredible adventure. And it was exactly the Stephen King book I needed at the closure of a hectic 2022. Fairy Tale opens with Charlie, a high school senior who has experienced the tragic loss of his mother, and the downwards spiral of his father. He has taken […]

The scorn is as high as an elephant’s eye…

1922 by Stephen King

November 24, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

1922 is a novella by Stephen King. It centers around a small family trying to run a farm in Nebraska: Wilf, Arlette, and their child Henry (who prefers to go by Hank, pleaseandthankyou). The story is written through the eyes of Wilf, who is making an end-of-life confession about the events of the titular year. As he tells it, his wife Arlette owned 100 acres of pristine farming land adjoining the family lot, and she was hell bent on selling it to a slaughterhouse company. […]

Everything I know about being an a-hole

Everything I know about love by Dolly Alderton

November 24, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I am a big fan of Alderton’s podcast, ‘Sentimental in the City’, which she cohosts with Caroline O’Donoghue. I also recently watched the series based on this book and found it a welcome trip down nostalgia lane. The girls living in a sharehouse, the interloping boyfriends, the crummy jobs, the loose nights. So I came to this book with good will and clean hands, I swear! But while this audio book covers much of the same territory as the tv series, it was somehow a […]

O Brother, Where Heart Thou?

Heartsick by Jessie Stephens

November 3, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Jessie Stephens’ debut novel, Heartsick, has taken the Australian book charts by storm and made her a best selling author. Her novel was created following intensive interviews with three heartsick real people: Claire, Patrick, and Ana. Claire and her freshly broken heart have left Toowoomba and moved to London (as so many Aussies do) in search of a do-over. There, she meets Maggie, and her new love story begins. Patrick is a university student with a crush on his classmate Caitlin. Caitlin; however, is in […]
