G'day, I'm an Australian Cannonballer! I'm a horror/thriller junkie embarking on my seventh Half-Cannonball. I'm a bit shy at commenting, but I absolutely love writing and reading reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caesar’s Wife's Quick Questions interview.)

Taking a Stand.

The End of the World as We Know It: New Tales from Stephen King's The Stand by Christopher Golden and Brian Keene

November 24, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

The Stand was first published in 1978 and is regarded among Constant Readers as King’s seminal work. Ask any true King fan for their thoughts on The Stand and settle in for the response. From the original published version vs the complete and uncut edition, the miniseries vs the ill-fated remake, Frannie (oh dear god that woman…), the “magical negro” stereotype… People have Opinions. Then, 2020 happened, and we all lived through a real super-flu. Sure, it wasn’t nearly as fatal, but it did seem […]

In the merry old land of Lud

The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands by Stephen King

November 20, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 3 Comments

For those keeping score: I’ve continued my return pilgrimage to The Dark Tower, recently completing the third novel in this epic tale. The Waste Lands brings Roland further along the path of the Beam toward his ultimate destination. This time, there are a few more members in the ka-tet, and the devastation of a world that has “moved on” becomes clearer. Throughout this third novel, Jake is welcomed back into Roland’s world and is officially part of the gang. Even more delightfully, Oy the billy-bumbler […]

Fish Fingers

Gyo by Junji Ito

November 15, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Gyo follows the increasingly grotesque misfortunes of Tadashi, a young man enjoying a seaside getaway with his girlfriend at his uncle’s coastal home when an inexplicably foul smell begins to fill the air. This isn’t your standard low-tide whiff — it’s an invasive, putrid stench that sends his already-germaphobic girlfriend into a spiral. Soon after, accompanied by strange swooshing noises, Tadashi spots the first of what becomes a full-blown invasion: a dead fish scuttling across the land on mechanical metal legs. From there, the story […]

The Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson

September 25, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Shrinking Man is a science fiction novel first published in 1956, written by Richard Matheson. You guessed it: the story follows a man who is shrinking. The novel opens with a detailed description of a fight between the protagonist, Scott Carey, who by this point is about an inch tall, and a spider. He is trapped in the basement. Scott fights the spider with a pin, and the narrative describes in depth the difficulties of navigating the terrain of the basement. It makes for […]

The Egg and other stories by Andy Weir

September 25, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

This was an audiobook called The Egg and Other Stories by Andy Weir. I was already familiar with The Egg — there’s a very well-known YouTube retelling of it, which my husband showed me not long before I started listening to this short collection. It’s a great listen, particularly in this moment in human history, and I’d recommend everyone look it up. 👉 The Egg – A Short Story The collection of stories here is extremely high quality overall. I really, really enjoyed them. They […]

The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King

September 4, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

There isn’t a Constant Reader alive who wouldn’t recognize the title of this post. The lobstrosities that plague Roland the Gunslinger in the second Dark Tower book are one of the only constants in a novel that hurls the reader through different points in both time and space (though always returning to New York City). The Drawing of the Three brings Roland closer to his elusive Dark Tower, but at great cost. Early on, he’s besieged by the horrid, ocean-dwelling lobstrosities, who rob him of […]
