This was pretty typical Christopher Moore: fun, a little bonkers, excellent supporting characters. Nate Quinn, a marine biologist trying to figure out why whales sing, his long-time friend and photographer Clay, and his grad student intern Amy have adventures in Hawaii, studying whales, recovering from mysterious sabotage efforts, and hiring a sketchy Rasta-wannabe Jersey boy as a crew member. When Nate sees “BITE ME” written on the underside of a whale’s tail (the fluke), it sets off a series of events that goes slowly but […]
Out-of-body experiences would come in handy in a prison
I enjoyed this very much, but I think I hold Carey to higher standards, so it didn’t wow me completely. The Girl With All the Gifts was tremendous, and The Boy on the Bridge was great, and I looooove Felix Castor, so while Fellside was very good as a book on its own, it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for from a Mike Carey Book. Jess Moulson is a heroin addict with a crummy boyfriend. While in a drugged stupor one night, their apartment […]
Needs more sandworms
Did you know Frank Herbert wrote non-science fiction stuff? I had never read anything of his except Dune, so when I found this at the library book sale, I was intrigued. Unfortunately, it reads like a less-interesting and not-quite-as-cohesive Alistair MacLean. There’s some kind of war on, against the Eastern Powers. It seems to maybe be in the future (keeping it sci-fi adjacent?). However, none of what’s going on in the outside world is really addressed. Ninety percent of the story takes place in a […]
Savoring this series
I love starting a book I know I’m going to love. That warm anticipatory glow makes those first pages even better. This series (this is book four) never disappoints. I was talking to a fellow science fiction fan on a plane, and we were lamenting that with sci-fi, often you get great characters OR a great story, but rarely both. With the Expanse series, you get it all: people you want to spend more time with, original and gripping stories, and excellent writing. In the […]
“Look, I know I’ve been joking around a lot, but it’s only to keep from being sad.”
I’ve been volunteering at my local library, and shelving books has taken me into unfamiliar territory: the nonfiction section! (dun dun duuuuuuun!) Since I’ve been attempting to read stuff by non-white non-men lately anyway, when I found this on my cart to return to the shelves, I decided to keep it for myself. I’m glad I did – Phoebe is a delight. The book is organized into general essay sections, but she rambles a bit, which makes it all much more conversational and easy to […]
Revisiting an old friend
I’ve read a couple yawners lately, so I needed something GOOD. I needed a dose of Felix Castor! I know Harry Dresden is beloved around here, but I’ve never really been a fan. I MUCH prefer Felix. He’s an exorcist in London. He works with the police occasionally, getting in touch with the recently deceased, and otherwise acting like a private investigator for clients with ghost trouble. He’s a conflicted atheist exorcist, though, which means he doesn’t actually like performing exorcisms, since he doesn’t know […]
