This book was thoroughly enjoyable fluff. It had a very A. Lee Martinez feel, except for the romance. Esther is a struggling actress, in between roles and trying to make ends meet in New York City. In desperation, she takes a job at Fensters, a giant department store with an entire fourth floor dedicated to Solsticeland. Fensters has learned over the years that going multicultural gets you more customers, so the sprawling display includes holiday stations for every religion or nationality you can think of. […]
Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: teresaelectro
How many times have you participated in CBR? Seven. Has it changed the way you read? Yes, it encouraged me to join more book clubs to read a wider variety and larger quantity of books! If you were to get a book-related tattoo, what would it be? Unfortunately, I can’t get any tattoos, but I’d probably wear a “reading is magic” temporary tattoo for fun. What are your three desert island books? Oh, this one is so hard as I read so many genres. If I’d […]
“There are one or two things that I do not fancy the looks of in this torture-chamber.”
I have to start this review with a confession. I picked it up at a library book sale specifically because I thought it would make me mad, and ranting about sexist asshats has led to some of my favorite reviews. It was written in 1921, and the back of the book talks all about how “remarkable women helped [the hero] along the road in their unique and pleasurable ways.” I thought it would be ridiculous and horrible and I could rip it to shreds in […]
Dependable, reliable, responsible…and all those other words that end in ‘ible’
I know “reliable” doesn’t sound like high praise, but I definitely don’t mean it as an insult. Sometimes you just want to grab something you know will be good and decent, won’t piss you off or make you cry, and won’t waste your reading time, even if you know it won’t stay with you. For me, Elizabeth Moon seems to be shaping up to be my “reliable” pick when I’m at the library. They always have a bunch, and it doesn’t really matter if you […]
Can I skip from book 1 to book 4 and just see how it ends?
This book is written by half of the author team that Voltrons into James S.A. Corey. Unfortunately, that means my expectations going into it were VERY high. It was an absolutely fine book, but A of all, it was fantasy, not sci-fi as the recommender claimed; and second of B, it was pretty standard fare for fantasy. In this fantasy land, poets hold the highest honor in the land, because they can capture concepts and give them form and volition. Once captured, though, the anthropomorphized […]
Maybe one of us should retire from these books, Mr. Demarkian
According to Goodreads, there are 29 Gregor Demarkian novels. I’ve read at least 26. I know some Cannonballers have become slightly disillusioned with the Stephanie Plum series, and narfna posted recently about not loving the latest Flavia de Luce as much. I have a similar feeling of Demarkian fatigue. The mystery in this one was interesting, but I think I’m a little tired of Haddam’s writing style. Mark DeAvecca is a student at a posh, hipster high school for rich kids. Before transfering to Windsor […]
