Going Obnoxious Teenager

July 5, 2018 by Bothari43 1 Comment

I read Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens several Cannonballs ago and enjoyed it, so when I was looking for something a little lighter, I thought I’d check out another one of hers. I’m not sure if I picked the wrong one, or if Beauty Queens was a fluke, but I did NOT enjoy this one. Jackass is 16 (I finished the book two days ago and have already forgotten his name). Jackass is your typical teen character: bored with school, with his parents, with his sister, with life. He’s obnoxious […]

Perfectly fine, but not for me

June 24, 2018 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

Inspired by other Cannonballers, I wanted to expand my horizons a little bit. So this one isn’t something I normally would have read, but it was just fine. I don’t read a lot of (plain? regular? non-genre?) fiction, where it’s just “this happened and then these people did this and then some more life stuff.” So while reading this book about a woman who escapes an abusive husband and then a second less-scary but also-unpleasant husband, going about making a new life for herself, I […]

A little spoilier and crankier than I planned

June 19, 2018 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

I’m not sure what I thought of this one. It was a quick read, and a decent mystery, and I (mostly) liked the main character. But I didn’t love it, and I can’t explain why without spoilers, so be warned! Ruth Galloway is an archeology professor. When a skeleton is found at the local saltmarsh, a detective named Nelson asks for her help in identifying the remains. He’s hoping to finally close the case of Lucy Downey, a young girl who disappeared 10 years previously, […]

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer – Jen K

June 18, 2018 by Bothari43 12 Comments

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? I did the first six, wrote one review for CBR 8, and then fell incredibly behind. Recently, I have noticed two changes in my reading habits. The first was due to my shift to reading almost exclusively on my iPad/Kindle app. At first, I only used it to read novels didn’t think I wanted/needed physical copies of so I started reading a lot more romance and urban fantasy series. While […]

I can’t wait to #CannonBookClub this one

May 29, 2018 by Bothari43 3 Comments

I’ve read two previous Octavia Butler books, and I didn’t like either of them, so I wasn’t too excited about starting the next #CannonBookClub book. But oh, happy day! Now I get it. I thought Kindred was gripping and intense and thoughtful and layered and wicked good. For the first layer, it’s a time travel story. Dana is randomly pulled back in time to save a young boy who turns out to be her ancestor. She never knows when she’ll be called, or how she’ll get home. […]

Decent beginning + cool idea still manages to = meh

May 26, 2018 by Bothari43 5 Comments

I don’t think I can recommend this one. The concept was interesting, the beginning was good, and the climax was well done. But the middle and the very end dragged it down too much. Jubal is a planet that was only recently settled by humans. Giant crystal structures poke up out of the landscape all over the planet. The humans call them Presences, and they are very sensitive to sound. If they’re too bothered by noise, they explode, sending shards of crystal into anyone or […]
