Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: TheShitWizard

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? Although I’ve lurked ever since the beginning of CBR, this is my second time participating (I was always too intimidated by the great reviews that everyone wrote, before deciding that life was too short for all that). It’s changed my reading in a couple of ways – I originally signed up as I hadn’t been reading as much as I did before life and work got in the way, and […]

Teen witches, good witches, bad witches, swamp monster witches, and more!

September 4, 2018 by Bothari43 4 Comments

This was a lovely little fairy tale that had just enough familiar pieces that I thought I knew where everything was going, but just enough originality that I was intrigued throughout and couldn’t put it down, even though I was pretty sure there was sad stuff coming. Plus, two truly excellent secondary characters (I want a Glerk and a Fyrian of my very own – this book should come with a swamp monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon). Once upon a time, there was a […]

Add two partial mysteries (one fresh, one aged); hard boil

“First-person white guy private investigator with a rocky past” is not exactly an original genre, but this one’s a very good entry into the pack. Wyatt Rivers is living a fairly great life in Las Vegas, doing work for casinos and enjoying drinks on the patio with his girlfriend. He takes on a case for a friend whose niece inherited a bar/live music venue and is getting harassed. Unfortunately, the bar is in Oklahoma City, Wyatt’s hometown and the site of some awful stuff from […]

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer – lowercasesee

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? I started CBR6 but only got a handful of books in before I fell by the wayside. I guess I’d almost consider this my first real CBR. I feel that I remember more of what I read now because I’m focused on the review, but I also extra hate bad books because it lingers with me until I get the review out. I’ve been a voracious reader my whole life, […]

This ridiculous book taught me the word ‘mucosal.’ …Yay?

This was totally silly, but a fun kind of silly! I mean, it tries real hard to be serious and scientific, but no. A book about a bunch of scientists sailing out to the Mariana Trench to find killer mermaids has to be at least a little silly. Years ago, a SyFy channel knock-off sent a bunch of faux-documentarians out to sea to film a search for mermaids. Their ship was found empty, and the recovered footage showed creatures that the world dismissed as hoaxes. […]

This *sniff* was my last *sob* China Mieville. I discovered him three-ish years ago, and have been rationing his books, but now I’m done! And now I have to wait till he writes something new! Woe is me! Ahem. Anyway. I didn’t adore this one, which makes it all the more woeful, but so-so YA China is better than no China at all. Deeba and her friend Zanna are in high school, and manage to make their way to a mysterious hidden land full of […]
