Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: Ellesfena

January 22, 2019 by Bothari43 15 Comments

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? CBR11 will be my 4th go-round. My New Year’s resolution in 2016 was to do more writing and I thought this would be a fun way to tackle that, and I was right! I finished a Cannonball in 8, 9, and 10, but this year I have a different resolution–well, two. I signed up for a half-Cannonball, because I want to work on the quality of my writing this year, […]

Too early for Worst Line of 2019? “My boobs looked nice and moundy.”

Spectre by Phaedra Weldon

January 10, 2019 by Bothari43 5 Comments

I bought this book at a going-out-of-business sale at a used bookstore, which is sad thing #1, and then the book itself was sad thing #2. It is TERRIBLE. It’s one of those urban fantasy series that are all the rage, and it has a nonsensical plot, unlikeable and derivative characters, and the dreadful writing. I had to put it down in December so I could finish it in January, just so I could tell y’all about it. Zoe is a wraith: she can astrally […]

A beautiful, melancholy story from my Book Exchange buddy

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

January 6, 2019 by Bothari43 1 Comment

I have a friend who likes to loan me sad books, and when I finish one and say “OMG that was sad!”, she’ll say, “I know, but wasn’t it SO well written?” I have a feeling that my friend and KatSings would get along well. My Book Exchange buddy got me this lovely, sprawling book, which is beautifully written and has an air of pervasiveness melancholy about it. I adored it anyway, and I appreciate that KatSings got me to read something that would not […]

Thank you, KatSings!

Thank you, whoever my Book Exchanger is! Neither of these was on my radar, and both of them sound awesome. I have to decide which one I want to start on my plane ride home for the holidays. I can’t wait to get started on them! Thanks oodles! UPDATE! Part 2 has arrived, with a bookmark (from The Strand, ooh aah!) and a lovely card from KatSings. Thank you, Katie!

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: BlackRaven

December 13, 2018 by Bothari43 6 Comments

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? This is my first CBR. A friend (who has participated in the past) recommended you to me. The change in my reading is I found a few books I never would have read on my own. I may or may not have liked them, but I did enjoy the experience. I also want to read more so I can recommend LOTS more books (as books are a passion of mine…. it’s my only […]

Less lust, more explanations, please

December 11, 2018 by Bothari43 3 Comments

This was more cheesy romance than I expected in my sci-fi western, but it ended up being pretty enjoyable. A group of people from various time periods in the “real” world have woken up randomly in the Wasteland. The Wasteland is full of monsters and not-quite-humans and some creatures sort of like vampires, and one bad dude named Ajani, who is trying to take over. The Arrivals (the folks from our world) don’t know why they’re there or how they got there, but over the […]
