You have eight bingos – congratulations! Have you participated in Book Bingo in previous years? I have done Book Bingo at least once before, but I got bogged down with my reviews, so I don’t think I was very successful. Last year I was too busy to even try Book Bingo. This year, I’ve been better at staying up on my reviews. My goal was a blackout, and I’m almost there! What’s your go-to ‘recommend to new friends’ book? I think it depends a lot […]
A nostalgic, charming romp
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente
This was loaned to me by a friend who said he and his teen daughter loved the whole series, and it is delightful. As someone who grew up with the Oz books, it felt familiar, like a love letter to all our favorite childhood books. September is 12, living in Nebraska and feeling bored. When the Green Wind calls her ‘somewhat irascible’ and offers a trip to Fairyland, she jumps at the chance. She feels a little bad about not waving goodbye to her mother […]
Good mystery, aggravating characters
The Saints of the Lost and Found by T.M. Causey
If you were a former watcher of Lost, or are a current watcher of From, or any of the dozens of mystery type shows where the show would be over if two or three characters just TALKED to each other and answered a damn question every once in a while, this book might drive you up the wall. The mystery part of the story was good, and the concept is cool, but holy hell I wanted to shake at least three or four of the […]
I’m just gonna gush effusively for a couple hundred words
City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky
I have loved all the Tchaikovsky sci-fi I’ve read, but this is my first time reading his fantasy stuff. The world building reminded me of Guy Gavriel Kay (setting it up so every piece has its counter), but with teeth. And the immersiveness reminded me of New Crobuzon. The first time I read China Mieville’s The Scar, I would be surprised when I looked up from the page and didn’t see ocean. But this is all Adrian’s own, and has his wonderful stamp all over […]
Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: kfishgirl
Your bio says you have trouble not finishing books, but you don’t like stories where you hate all the characters or where a character has a stupid name. Is there anything that does make you put down a book unfinished? Do you look for a redeeming factor if it’s a book you’re not 100% enjoying? Ooh this is a good question. Like you said, I have a hard time not finishing books. It really has to be an accumulation of sins for me to not […]
“We think that it is better not to be sentient. Imagine how hard that would be, to actually have to think about things all the time.”
Children of Memory by Adrian Tchaikovsky
The first book in this series was straight up hard science fiction, and completely blew me away, as well as changing my opinion on spiders. The second book explored a new planet, and felt more like a horror story, with the astronauts/settlers discovering the Thing that was on the planet before them. This third book changes the game again, with two new planets, several new characters, and an almost mystery feel. It takes a while for things to settle in, but once our heroes start […]
