Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: esmemoria

August 12, 2021 by Bothari43 6 Comments

You read a lot of heavy stuff! (Or ‘deep’ as you call them.) What do you like best about reading challenging books? I am very interested in how people get through difficult or traumatic experiences. It’s kind of like why I watch a lot of true crime. There is something about people’s responses to adversity that make me feel more connected to humanity and my own story. Even when books don’t have an uplifting ending, I find it important to understand life in all of […]

“Irritation was the first part of him awake, and the rest of him followed dutifully along, despite strong misgivings.”

Driving the Deep by Suzanne Palmer

As a general rule, I don’t buy full-price books at bookstores, and I especially don’t buy full-price books from authors/titles I have never heard anything about. Also, I don’t buy books in series that aren’t the first book. However, I love sci-fi books, I love women sci-fi authors, and I have a weakness for sea monster and underwater stories, so I broke all my rules and bought this brand new second-in-a-series underwater space book by an author I’d never heard of. And I’m so glad […]

As if cleaning out Mean Grandma’s hoard wasn’t unpleasant enough, now there are possibly monsters?

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

July 30, 2021 by Bothari43 4 Comments

I had read good things about T. Kingfisher from other Cannonballers, so when I saw this one at the book store I grabbed it. I will definitely be seeking out more of her stuff. This is a story about a heroic dog. Okay, maybe not really, but the dog is a very important part of the story, and the storyteller says over and over that if Bongo had been scared, she would’ve run. She trusted his instincts more than her own. We all think that […]

When a stranger on a plane gives you a book and a leftover tortilla chip falls out of it, you know you’ve made a friend

Zorro's Shadow by Stephen J.C. Andes

July 16, 2021 by Bothari43 11 Comments

I flew to see my dad for the 4th of July (hi, sabian30!), and wore my Ozma of Oz shirt on the plane. The woman who had the seat next to me complimented my shirt, yay! Always fun to meet a fellow reader. She had her headphones in during the flight, so I didn’t want to disturb her, but when she removed them when we landed I asked her how long she gave a bad book before giving up on it. The book I brought […]

“Wormholes tend to travel in packs.”

FINNA by Nino Cipri

July 15, 2021 by Bothari43 5 Comments

Well this was an adorable little slice of a book. A wormhole opens in a giant IKEA-like store, a customer wanders through it, and two disgruntled employees (who have recently broken up and have been trying to avoid each other) are assigned to go fetch her, using a FINNA device to track her down. Ava and Jules hate their soul-sucking retail jobs but love each other, even though their various neuroses have made them incompatible. When the employees are all herded into a break room […]

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: The Book Omnivore

July 1, 2021 by Bothari43 17 Comments

So you’re a “running nerd?” Do you listen to audio books while you dash up mountains? No, not when I dash up mountains 😁 but late autumn and winter here are usually cold and very dark, so during those months I need all the motivation I can get to go out and run. And audio books provide me with motivation and a well-needed distraction from the weather. I’ll never forget running in a dark forest last winter, with only my head torch for a light, in the […]
