The Deep by Rivers Solomon

June 14, 2022 by booktrovert 4 Comments

The novel The Deep was written by Rivers Solomon, but the origin of the story is actually more diverse. Drexciya, an experimental duo, created a sonic template for the story, which was expanded on by clipping. in a song titled “The Deep” and then transformed again into this short but extremely compelling novel. The story revolves around an imagined community of beings called wajinru, born of unimaginable tragedy. Imagine the real horror of pregnant women on slave ships, who were tossed overboard into the ocean […]

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

June 13, 2022 by booktrovert 3 Comments

I have been really looking forward to reading this and for me it did not disappoint at all. I’m definitely a fan of Emily St. John Mandel, and I love authors who build an entire universe out of their characters without deliberately building a series / sequels. You can pick up any of her novels and see that they’re companions, without needing to read them in a particular order. I think it’s important to say that so anyone who is completely new to Emily St. […]

“To be the world, witnessing itself.”

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

June 13, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

Content warning – this book contains many mentions of suicide. The plot is very much “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but it’s set in England and instead of a family man on the brink it’s a woman in her mid thirties, single with no children, who is losing the will to live. Nora, our protagonist, has struggled with her mental health (it’s more or less implied – and maybe I’m filling in a bit here because I’ve read Haig’s other non-fiction book about his own struggles […]

Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby

June 11, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

Razorblade Tears is a revenge-focused crime novel about two aging, mostly-ex criminals who set out to avenge the murder of their sons. Both Ike and Buddy Lee have unresolved issues with their sons, who were married to one another – neither man was accepting of their relationship while their children were alive. Their sons had been together since college and had a child together, but neither Ike nor Buddy Lee had more than a passing glance at one another because of their refusal to accept […]

The Known World by Edward P. Jones

June 9, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

This extraordinary novel is a very American story, set primarily in the time before the Civil War in a fictional Manchester County, Virginia. The setting and the story may be fictional, but the account of what takes place to the characters is very much rooted in the actual lived reality for people in that time period. I am struggling to remember how this book made it to my TBR pile – I wish I could remember who recommended it, because I’d be curious to see […]

Ancestor Trouble by Maud Newton

June 7, 2022 by booktrovert 2 Comments

For the past few years, when asked about what makes me want to teach, I have given an answer that includes, in some form, the concept of being a good ancestor. I’ve become really taken with the idea that we always leave a part of ourselves, and to a certain extent we get to shape what that looks like. That idea has grown inside me in the past few years – maybe because of the amazing work of Layla Saad, who explicitly acknowledges in her […]
