A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ni Ghriofa

July 15, 2022 by booktrovert 1 Comment

A woman’s husband dies – and this woman, she loves him. Completely, so much so that she is willing to dissolve family ties in the 1700s in Ireland, which we can imagine would be difficult for any woman in many eras to be willing to do but even more so at at this time and place. Her husband does not just die, but is murdered. And when she finds his murdered body his blood pours from his body – an open, beating wound. What does […]

Wayfarer’s Series #3 and 4

Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers

July 13, 2022 by booktrovert 3 Comments

Stars, this series was so good. Record of a Spaceborn Few is my favorite book of the series, although I did love them all. I cannot recommend them highly enough – but this third book was my favorite. The Wayfarer’s series presents the most humane version of a Universe in which humans have finally shuffled off their earthly coils and set sail for the Great Beyond. In books 1 and 2, the reasons for doing so are hinted at (climate crises, war, etc) and there is […]

Semi Genre-bending Horror

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno

July 11, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

This was a wild ride. At many points while reading I was sort of reminded of House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski – although this was not nearly as physical a book as that one. It was genuinely creepy throughout. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get to this one in the late fall, as it has excellent horror-vibes. It’s also a really fascinating depiction of grief, nailing the surrealism of mourning a loved one. The story begins with Vera’s funeral, so it’s not a […]

Really tough to read right now, in the aftermath of another shooting

There There by Tommy Orange

July 6, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

First,  huge trigger warning, especially right now, as we go through the aftermath of yet ANOTHER SHOOTING at what we should expect to be a peaceful gathering – this novel crescendos towards a shooting at a Powwow in Oakland, CA. The events that precede the shooting are the main thrust of the novel, and the final section contains descriptions of the event itself and brief content about its aftermath. I’d say maybe it isn’t for right now but honestly, when are we not reeling from […]

“Herein lies the tragedy of the age … that men know so little of men.” – W.E.B. DuBois

Creatures of Passage by Morowa Yejide

July 6, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

I am not a scholar of mythology, I had only a passing acquiantance with Egyptian gods and goddesses when I had the pleasure of reading Creatures of Passage. But this genre-bending novel made me want to learn more as I read about twin siblings Osiris and Nephthys and their triumphs and tragedies in the Kingdom of Anacostia – a neighborhood in DC. Yejide mixes some elements of a magical tale with gritty realism, to superb results. This is one part ghost story, one part redemption / […]

“The healing is in the trying.”

I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet by Shauna Niequist

July 4, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

I’m relatively new to Shauna Niequest – I found her by listening to the Modern Mrs. Darcy podcast, What Should I Read Next? (which is amazing, and has added some questions for me to think about as I consider what books make it to the TBR and which ones I might not need to make time for). I really enjoyed her episode of the podcast, so I went ahead and added her latest book to my library queue. So, I jumped into this book knowing […]
