Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley

September 5, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Minds, as this was a comedic thriller full of mind games (and a possible cult). If you’re looking for something incredibly fun and intensely readable, look no further. I loved this brief ride of a book. I don’t know how I’ve managed to avoid Crosley’s writing until this point, but I plan to add more of her writing to my TBR pile. The premise itself is rather thin – a woman (Lola) meets up with former colleagues for dinner in Chinatown. […]

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi

September 4, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – hot. This book is rather steamy, and you will be inundated with descriptions of the incredible hotness of nearly every character. This book is about grief, and owning your own body and will and exercising those in a way that truly embraces life. But it is ALSO a book about incredibly beautiful, talented people with lots of money lusting after one another in locations so beautiful they belong on the cover of Architectural Digest magazine. It’s a romance novel with some taboo […]

A Year in the Life

Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh

September 4, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Funky, because like most Moshfegh novels this book isn’t afraid to really get into the funk of being a human. I am still trying to decide how much I actually like Moshfegh’s novels. I really enjoy her WRITING, and her books keep me interested the whole time, which I suppose are two signs that I really like her. She’s not at all squeamish about human bodies, and there’s something sort of refreshing in that. And yet, there are images in her novels […]

“Sure, everything is ending. But not yet.”

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

September 3, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Time (Bingo!) Both because this books plays a bit with timelines, and because I read The Candy House out of the order of publication (which I think was mostly fine). Having read The Candy House, I was sort of prepared for the style of this novel – a series of chapters that are interrelated, working together to tell a larger story (with a huge cast of characters). I know that some consistent complaints about these books revolve around the fact that there are […]

Three Books and a Bingo

To Paradise by Hanya Yanagihara

The Swimmers by Julia Otsuka

Nuclear Family by Joseph Han

August 21, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

Today I’ll catch up with some reviews that have been waiting for a bit AND make a complete Bingo across the top row! First up: For the spot Monster, I offer: To Paradise by Yanagihara. I chose “monster” for this book because of its intimidating length (over 700 pages! I don’t read tomes that like very often any more) and because I felt very nervous about reading it after being so utterly destroyed by A Little Life. Well. I can’t exactly say that this book matches ALL […]

“How you say what you mean changes what you say.”

Time is a Mother by Ocean Vuong

August 8, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Verse, for this lovely book of poetry I am an avid reader – and I love a good poem, especially one embedded into a narrative. When a character reads a poem in a novel, I always think, I should read more poetry. But I rarely have the patience to finish an entire book of poetry. This book, consumed over several days, in between chapters of the book that I am STILL reading (Hanya Yanagihara writes looong books!) – this book might be […]
