Emma Watson launched a Goodreads Book Club, and I joined. Naturally, I read My Life on the Road dutifully (because I can’t bear NOT to read the book, like a typical Type-A student). First thoughts: I’ve known about Steinem through the years, but I’ve never actually gotten to read anything directly written by her. I know she’s been a keystone and controversial cultural figure, and I know that her feminism may differ somewhat from my own, and that’s okay. We came of age in different […]
Pre-CBR Book Club notes.
A few fellow Cannonballers’ brief reviews have been trickling in with disclaimers about saving the good stuff for our book discussion, and I’ll follow their lead. I want to save my most salient thoughts for the Cannonball Read Book Club, and I’m eager to hear everyone else’s. In other news: hooray for Cannonball Read Book Club and faintingviolet for arranging it!!!! You can find the full list of NOTES on my blog, but here is one that I’ll post, and it was my immediate and […]
Is getting that vaccine *really* going to kill you?
The Chancellor and I have been wanting to discuss books more in-depth, and our friend A, who is also part of our book club, has been wanting more of the same. So we’ve been challenging ourselves to read extra books in between Book Club meetings. Last month, we had a rousing discussion over Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, and this month, A has chosen Eula Biss’s On Immunity: An Inoculation. Biss is an academic who pieces apart the pro- and anti-vaccination camps with incredible clarity. […]
Marie Kondo is my hero.
Last January, I devoured Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but it wasn’t until the summer that I actually got to go through the “program” she advocates. It was life-changing. Really. I said goodbye to clothes that had made me feel beautiful but that no longer fit my no-longer-college-student body. Old knick-knacks that no longer went on display went to Goodwill. It was truly freeing. But I still had questions, particularly about her style of organizing and folding (especially clothes. I don’t have […]
The Red (Tent) Wedding
Years and years ago, I don’t remember when, Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent generated a lot of buzz in the lit-fic circles, particularly around book clubs. I picked it up about 8 years ago in a garage sale and then—story of my life—never read it. In my zeal to clean out my shelves, I’ve been forcing myself to stop.going.to.the.library.already and just focus on what is on my shelf. It’s been a rather telling experience, and this book has made me glad for the discipline. You […]
Mothers and Daughters
I’m back! I had an accidental reviewing hiatus (by which, I mean that I have been reading my books but letting the reviews pile up), which should be over now. I have a whole bunch of reviews written and am ready to pretend that I will never procrastinate my reviewing ever again. First up is Edwidge Danticat’s Breath, Eyes, Memory, which I liked quite a bit, though not as well as her short story collection, Krik? Krak! (reviewed for CBR7). I did find the mother-daughter […]
