I read a lot. Writing reviews has become tougher. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: bonnie's Quick Questions interview.)

bonnie's Reviews:

Only a month late to the reviewing party!

June 30, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

You can find my full review on my blog, but I’ve enclosed the highlights here: We’ve discussed at length what did and what didn’t work for us, and ultimately, my review is mixed. Here’s what worked for me: *The time travel—hearing how Kivrin was confused by the language and customs was deeply interesting and made me think how a “simple” difference of 28 years is actually an entire generation and could be disorienting if you didn’t know the culture at all. *Descriptions of the Plague—I […]

A fine new Erdrich novel

June 30, 2016 by bonnie 1 Comment

It’s always exciting when an author you love comes out with a new book. I’ve been working my way through Louise Erdrich’s canon, and I was pleased to see that she had a new novel, written within the same universe as some of her earlier works, including Plague of Doves and The Round House (which is my favorite Erdrich novel to date). I was curious to see how LaRose stacked up, and I’m pleased to say that it did not disappoint in the least. I […]

A disappointing devotional read

June 30, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

My evening devotional project has consisted of reading Ellen G. White’s Conflict of the Ages series, since I have not read them all the way through, and they are considered landmark texts in the Adventist faith. The Acts of the Apostles is the fourth in the series and is one of the least cited or quoted from the series. I was personally interested to see what insights I could gain into the apostolic quests and whether or not this book lived up to the hype. […]

Moar Sherman Alexie [even if it’s so short]!!!!!

June 30, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

It’s no secret around these parts that I’m a huge Sherman Alexie fan. And while most of his works would be considered adult, I absolutely freaking loved his young adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I’ve been really hoping that he would write more works for young readers. And when I found out about Thunder Boy, Jr., I realized that my wish was coming true. I explain in my full review why I am still a bit disgruntled with Sherman Alexie–even […]

A lovely, Emma Watson-approved book

June 30, 2016 by bonnie 1 Comment

I’m still wayyyyy behind on reviews. I read this now almost two months ago, and I’m nowhere caught up in my reviews. I’m on vacation again (this time at the in-laws’), and I’m all caught up with my summer class grading. Here’s hoping I can do the same with CBR reviews. Fingers crossed! Now, for the review/link: While I’ve not been great at keeping up with Emma Watson’s Our Shared Shelf Goodreads Book Club, I’ve certainly tried to keep up with the reading so far. […]

Reframing a biblical case for same-sex marriage from an academic standpoint

June 19, 2016 by bonnie 1 Comment

After spending years hearing people glibly declare, “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!” or slinging around certain key “proof” texts from the Bible, I was longing for a book that would delve into the Bible’s complexity and actual ambiguity regarding LGBT individuals and relationships. The Bible study I undertook for myself in 2012 showed me that my own understanding of the Bible is steeped in assumptions about language, history, and context, and some of that has shifted since the original text was written. […]
