My sister read Sofia Samatar’s second book, The Winged History, and raved about it. I decided to read it, and then also determined to read the book that came first, A Stranger in Olondria. As it turns out, I didn’t really need to do so, since the novels are fairly separate—even if they occur in the same universe and have a few crossover characters. But I’ll spare all my raving for The Winged Histories in the next review. I’ve got to cover A Stranger in […]
A delightful Austen novel made into a delightful Austen adaptation
Finally, I am all caught up with The Austen Project! There really are no excuses for me to put off The Lizzie Bennet Diaries now. Ahem. Anyway, I went into Northanger Abbey with high hopes, because I genuinely like the original sooooo much. I did my Master’s Thesis on the two film adaptations (the 1980s film is suuuuper campy and not all that great, the 2007 film is deliciously aces and full of female sexual empowerment in ways that Jane Austen would totally approve of […]
A new Tracy Chevalier favorite.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge Tracy Chevalier fan, but haven’t been as good as I should have been in keeping up with her newest books. I read At the Edge of the Orchard and thought it was just okay, but I really did like The Last Runaway. Count it in the category with Girl with a Pearl Earring and Falling Angels. You can find my full review here.
An interesting, academic glimpse at intersex issues connected with theology.
As you all know, I’ve been working on expanding my scholarly reading in LGBT issues and arguments, so that I can help non- or not-yet-affirming Christian students in their own breadth of knowledge. I decided that I needed to move towards the + in the LGBT+ acronyms, and so this book was checked out from the library. I haven’t read too much on intersex issues, apart from an interesting I.W. Gregorio novel I had read last year, so I thought it would be important to […]
“Bitches gots to learn.”
I’ve been seeing reviews for the first volume of Bitch Planet pop up on CBR and Goodreads, so I was curious to see what it was all about. I’m always interested in new graphic novel volumes, especially while I wait not-so-patiently for the new volume of Saga to release. I figured it would be good for me to diversify, especially with woman-centered comics. Bitch Planet promises to be all that. Read my full review for my thoughts on intersectional feminism, as seen in this comic.
Giving voice to the silenced
I faintly remember the reporting of the Catholic Church scandal in Boston back in 2002, but I definitely have seen the aftershocks in many churches beyond the Catholic faith having to deal with sexual assault scandals and the inability of the churches to protect their parishioners from molestation and assault. Therefore, I was highly interested when the movie Spotlight was released and then won the Oscar for Best Picture of 2015. One of my students had read the book Betrayal for his book/movie project, and […]
