In my Barnes and Noble spree, I saw a children’s/young adult novel that had an intriguing title and a lot of awards affixed to it. I had not heard of The War that Saved My Life, but the premise sounded interesting. After all, children’s and YA books about World War II greatly interest me (The Book Thief, anyone?). I was not prepared for how heavy this book was. It sounds like a negative endorsement, and I promise you it’s not, but damn. There is a […]
A lovely, heavy, and poignant young adult novel
When The Chancellor and I go on semi-monthly outings to Barnes and Noble, we really like to scope the place out to build our TBR lists. We do a lot of Goodreads uploading and an occasional library loan requesting. Last Saturday night, we had a grand old time at B&N, and I might have gone overboard on my ILL requests. A HUGE stack came in for me a few days later. And then another small stack added to the pile. Oops. I have been temporarily […]
FINALLY posting my Children of God Review.
Last year, I read The Sparrow for CBR7, and it totally wrecked me. I’m not even kidding, I finished the book huddled up in bed, surrounded by Kleenex. It was beautiful and damaging and raw all at once. I had heard there was a sequel, but just did not feel quite up to it at the time. Thanks to faintingviolet’s cheerleading, I decided I would be ready to read the sequel in 2016. And I am glad that I read it this year. Faintingviolet’s and […]
Eh.
So…where do I begin? I’ve heard a lot about Kafka, but I didn’t know too much. I should also add that European aesthetic literary style is typically not my thing. I had purchased The Metamorphosis and Other Stories years ago but never got around to reading it. Finally, in 2016, I conquered this book. And there’s not a whole lot to be said, on my part. What little I do say you can find on my blog. If you like Kafka, what is the appeal […]
Creativity is magic, indeed.
When my friend A and I started up our writing group last semester (which sadly no longer exists in its brick-and-mortar form, as A has moved to another state. Thank goodness for Skype), she got me this book as an inspiration. I’ve been trying to tap into my creativity and try my hand at creative writing after a since-early-college hiatus, as well as develop better discipline with my academic writing. I had tried and rejected Eat, Pray, Love after 40 pages, so I was nervous […]
Ending a religious series on a so-so note.
I’ve finally finished reading The Conflict of the Ages series. I’m ready to get back to reading the Bible itself for my evening devotion. While I am glad to have read a keystone series from our most prolific founding member in the Adventist faith, I’ve discovered that there’s nothing like the original source of faith itself to cement your faith. The Great Controversy is an odd mishmash of Reformation History, the Millerite movement and subsequent founding of the Adventist Church, and exegesis of the Book […]
