I read a lot. Writing reviews has become tougher. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: bonnie's Quick Questions interview.)

Young adult multiverse romance

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

January 4, 2021 by bonnie 2 Comments

It’s no secret that I like young adult fiction a LOT, although I don’t always like young adult romances. I hadn’t rushed out to read The Sun is Also a Star precisely because of the romance elements I usually avoid. And while there are plenty of improbabilities and near-misses that makes this book seem…impossible…I wasn’t mad at it. The novel focuses on Natasha, a Black Jamaican immigrant who is undocumented and about to be deported (thanks to the greatest day of her dad’s life) and […]

A delightful YA Jewish short story collection

It's a Whole Spiel: Love, Latkes, and Other Jewish Stories by Katherine Locke and Laura Silverman

January 3, 2021 by bonnie Leave a Comment

What does it mean to be Jewish? I have never contemplated this question, because I am not Jewish. But I am trying to read about diverse faiths and cultural perspectives, particularly when they intersect with other identities. It’s a Whole Spiel caught my eye at my library (which is now open for limited in-person browsing, thank goodness!), and I was happy to devour it over this weekend. This anthology of short stories features all kinds of Jewish voices and perspectives, from people who are culturally […]

Darius the Great Deserves Better by Adib Khorram

January 2, 2021 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I read Darius the Great Is Not Okay last year, prepared to LOVE it, and really just liked it. That’s not an indictment of the book–it was a good book! I was curious to see where Adib Khorram would take the story next, and as it turned out, he really dug deep into the characters. Darius Kellner has returned from his spring trip to Iran. He’s still best friends with Sohrab and has joined the soccer team at school. He’s made friends. He’s gotten a […]

CBR Bookmas: the most wonderful time of year.

November 28, 2020 by bonnie 4 Comments

Hello, my friends. I declared review amnesty in 2019 and subsequently had to do the same in 2020. My doctor diagnosed me with anxiety in February, a mere month before my state issued its stay-at-home order, and I’ve been teaching my college classes remotely since March. I have done a LOT of reading, but have had precious little energy to put words together beyond emails to students. Here’s hoping 2021 is better. On a cheerier note, I love the CBR Book Exchange and had to […]

Happy Bookmas, from KatSings!

December 5, 2019 by bonnie 1 Comment

I decided to sit out this year’s Cannonball, after getting too far behind in reviews (as in, have not started, and am definitely behind my reading goal of a double Cannonball this year), but I could not miss our annual book exchange. KatSings is a hero and a champion. The Amazon Prime Fairy came to my house TWICE today, which was a double excitement, as the first installment was thrilling enough. I’ve been dying to read Elizabeth Acevedo, and now, I will be bringing this […]

Thank you, mathildehoeg!!!

December 13, 2018 by bonnie 4 Comments

It has been a long semester (case in point: I’m 50 reviews behind, and am currently typing this on my phone at the dealership, because my husband’s trusty car has finally given up the ghost). So thanks to magical Christmas elf mathildehoeg for impeccable timing and beautiful gifts. I look forward to reading both books (the authors are both on my TBR list) and coloring in the activity book–how did you know I love to color??? Thank you, mathildehoeg!!!!
