Blingle Bells's Reviews:

Are there any Liane Moriarty holdouts here?

May 14, 2017 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

I know that CBR participants are pretty fond of Liane Moriarty in general, but is anyone here still not sure if she’s for them? Let me help you. Do you like… Books with an ensemble cast where each character is more nuanced and developed than most books with a single protagonist? Books with multiple subplots, all absolutely engrossing, that are tied up so satisfyingly at the end, one by one, that it’s like popping bubble wrap, but are almost never too tidy? Adorable Australian lingo? […]

Reading the reviews sums up the experience.

I think that I was really in the wrong mental place to read this book. I picked it up to help me figure out how to cope with a relative that I suspect might have borderline personality disorder. I started it while she was in a snit not talking to me because I’d taken a few hours to answer a text message. I thought, “I’ll read this book and figure out some coping strategies and be ready to deal with this anew when she starts […]

Rebecca Explains it All (In a Good Way!)

April 28, 2017 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

3.5 stars, rounding down because when I think back on it (I finished it a few weeks ago), the things that bugged me stick out more than the things that didn’t. This might’ve been a four star book for me if I’d checked at all on what it actually was. I’d hoped it would be a deeper dive into the title concept, aka “mainsplaining” (although Solnit herself did not coin that term and is not a fan of it). The title essay was fantastic, so […]

Do good work and share it with people.

A few pages into this book, I thought that it was really not for me. If I’m being perfectly honest, I only continued because it was a fast read and I’m several weeks behind on my Cannonball. It’s a book about creativity, and making things, and getting off your ass and actually doing it, and finding inspiration, and living a healthy life instead of just being a creative who drinks and stays up all night. I ran into some weird identity stuff here. I couldn’t […]

I’m late to the train.

April 19, 2017 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

Another Cannonball favorite finally made its way up my TBR list, and I had mixed feelings. I honestly don’t know why any reviews anywhere ever would call this book fast-paced, because the pace was absolutely killing me for the first half. Nothing happened but cryptic allusions to secrets and Rachel’s alcoholism and depression. I hated it for a while. Every time I put it down I’d feel kind of sad and crappy about life for a few hours before I finally realized that Rachel’s miserable […]

A delightful book to swallow whole.

April 15, 2017 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

Mary Roach is a gem, truly, and a gift to the world. Every time I read a book of hers (and I’ve read all but one), “delightful” is the word that comes to mind, because her delightful personality shines through every word without ever overtaking the book. She has a very specific talent and she uses it so damn delightfully (there’s that word again) that the formula never gets old, even when it probably should. Her talent: taking a subject that is either kind of […]
