Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling

April 13, 2019 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

How the hell am I supposed to review Harry freaking Potter? Just the fifth best-selling book in any language of all time, nbd. I’m sure I have some original thoughts on it. I read this 12ish years ago but I was a different human then. I’ve started and finished a bachelor’s degree, gotten married, had a child, gained an astronomical amount of context, perspective, and life experience since then. I’ve also had a memory-wiping coma. One of my few resolutions this year was to reread […]

Girl in the Dark by Anna Lyndsey

April 13, 2019 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

I thought this was going to be a depressing read that I trudged through because it was short and I sometimes feel obligated to bear witness to others’ pain. That was not at all the case. This book is gorgeous. It’s poetic and absolutely beautiful. There’s a recurring metaphor for suicidal thoughts that it just incredible. It’s funny and sad and really, really, really beautiful. It wasn’t that I didn’t think someone with a debilitating illness (in Lyndsey’s case, she has an extreme sensitivity to […]

Delightfully useful for learners and educators.

How We Learn by Benedict Carey

April 13, 2019 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

Well, I just loved this book. The title and subtitle pretty much tell you what it’s about, but I do want to take a minute to impress upon you guys the one thing I didn’t realize until I read it: this book is for practically everyone. As a homeschool mom, I thought this might be a dry but useful book that would help me grow as an educator, but oh no. Are you a student of anything? Any age, any topic? Are you educating anyone […]

The uncanny valley of my life.

Stray City by Chelsey Johnson

April 12, 2019 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

Have you ever had a thing that’s so much yours that you’re prickly about it? A hobby that you’re into so much more than just casually that you can’t listen to other people discuss it casually? Something you feel protective of, defensive about, proprietary toward? That you can’t discuss with (almost) anyone else because they will not be on the same level as you and that’ll make you feel weird? And you feel almost angry if you hear someone else talking about like it’s theirs […]

Life-changing concept, underwhelming book.

The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking

April 11, 2019 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

I feel like this review is liable to have more words in it than the book did. I’m years late to the hygge train – I was vaguely familiar with the concept when it got big in America a couple years ago, but never really paid attention to it. Well, here I am now, and let me make it clear that I am a convert. There’s finally a word for the feeling I feel with candles lit and a thunderstorm outside! That powerful feeling […]

How to Party with an Infant by Kaui Hart Hemmings

March 19, 2019 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

Something about this book just did not connect, and I’m really torn about whether it’s me or the author who’s the issue. Mele Hart is a single mom in San Francisco whose boyfriend/baby’s father turned out to be already engaged (this isn’t a spoiler, it’s on the blurb). She’s part of a playgroup with a few other moms and one dad. People get assigned to small groups (is this a thing? The closest thing I’ve heard of is MOPS) by a larger organization, which also […]
