Ask Me Why I Hurt is the memoir of a pediatrician who operates a mobile medical van providing treatment to homeless teenagers. It covers his marriage to fellow pediatrician Amy, family life over a decade, the growth of his van endeavor to eventually provide more services, and a number of stories of the kids he sees on the van. How am I supposed to review a book like this? On its own merits, it simply isn’t a very good book. Dr. Christensen seems to be […]
Liane Moriarty, would you like to go steady?
All these years, I’ve never claimed a favorite author. I guess I was waiting for someone a little more highbrow, but screw it. I’m ready to say it: Liane Moriarty is my favorite author. This is a book that walks like chick lit, talks like chick lit, has cover art like chick lit, has a summary that reads like chick lit, but it’s not chick lit. Or it’s chick lit so good it’s almost subversive. I don’t know. What I do know is that (this […]
Eight stories about ugly, beautiful, human women.
Oh, this book. I have hearts in my eyes over this book. It’s so odd that 2/3 of my CBR8 books so far are anthologies, but here we go. If you have any affection at all for anthologies, this one is like sliding into a warm bubble bath with a glass of dry red wine. I’ll get to summaries of each story shortly, but first, can we talk about Schappell’s treatment of her female characters? It’s implicit in the title that this might be a […]
Just put some nails in your wall. Please.
I read Myquillyn Smith’s home design book The Nesting Place: It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Beautiful last year and I hated it. I’ve never read Myquillyn’s blog, but I do follow a lot of similar DIY décor blogs. I reread it for CBR8, and…I guess I came around a little. My original complaints still stand, so I’ll address them first. What is the deal with the nail holes? People apparently being terrified to put nail holes in their walls was mentioned at […]
It’s always hard for me to say if I love or hate a book of short stories.
Kevin Wilson’s collection of eleven short stories was my first time reading him, and it turned out to be one of those books that I’d recommend to someone but I wouldn’t really want to read any of his other stuff. It’s impossible to generalize with how I felt about these stories, so I’ll review each one briefly. Grand Stand-In: Wilson started strong with this one, which was hands down my favorite story in the series. An agency hires out stand-in grandparents for a variety […]
