Some Assembly Required is a memoir by a young transgender man. It’s a quick read that covers his life, from his dawning feelings of male identification as a child to his physical transition. It’s a very fast read, and a decent book considering the age of the author. I would highly recommend it to someone not particularly well-versed in transgender issues who wants to learn, but if you’re more knowledgable about LGBTQIA* issues it doesn’t necessarily add much to the discussion. I’m not saying that […]
A peace that blacked yer eye, a peace that split yer lip.
I think there are two ways to write about a not-first book in a series or trilogy: short and vague to avoid spoilers, or not. I’m gonna go with door number two because it’s impossible to write about this book without spoiling the resolution to the cliffhanger at the end of book one. So… If you don’t want to know what happens to Viola… … … … … … … … … Still here? Okay. This book just […]
Ow, Todd?
This book had me like… And then… And then… You know what part. If you’ve read it, you know exactly what part that one is for, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. I don’t even know what to say about this book. It is everything I’m not usually into: there are fantasy elements, long journeys through rough terrain, a boy and his dog – fine stuff, but totally not my thing. It somehow wound up on my Goodreads to-read list, and I […]
Misleading title, decent book.
From the title you’re probably thinking this is some kind of gossipy expose on the lives of teachers, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that was kinda what I wanted it to be. (I know, I know. Please don’t judge me.) It was totally not that. It’s basically a book of what the author calls interlocking essays, all of which are really either meditations or vignettes on teaching. If that’s what you’re looking for, it’s a worthy read. Fortunately, that’s also a […]
If Donald Trump was an alcoholic frat boy who wrote a book.
I am honestly embarrassed to have read this book. I guess I must just have some kind of Catholic self-flagellation problem, because I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt within 10 pages that I would hate every minute of this book, yet I still finished it. Why? I will never, ever, ever get those hours of my life back. How can I even summarize this stupid book? I’m extremely late to the party with hating this book, it came out years ago and seems […]
“Everything that isn’t loving a child is just for show.”
Grace is a married mother of three. Her youngest, three year old Jack, is terminally ill. She has a background in epidemiology. She also is having an affair with her high school boyfriend. An allegation is made by an unknown party, accusing Grace of Munchhausen’s by proxy – making Jack sick in order to get attention from medical personnel. She is horrified to realize that she does perfectly fit the profile of a MBP mother. This book was absolutely heartbreaking, but I absolutely adored it. […]
