I honestly have no idea why I got this book from the library, but I’m really glad I did! I think I must’ve put it on my to-read list a couple years ago, and once I finally got it, it languished in my library pile for ages. I’ve been taking pictures since I could pick up a camera – my mom, grandfather, and godfather are/were truly incredible photographers. I’ve been featured in two art galleries (#humblebrag) I have a little side business doing family […]

The title of the book pretty much covers it.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. I’m really not sure I have 250 words to say about this book. It’s 71 lists about parenthood. They’re not hilarious, but they’re pretty funny. Maybe not laugh out loud, but definitely chuckle out loud. It’s good to know other kids are as weird as mine. On a list of the cool new things you’ll get to do as a parent? Let someone stare blankly at you and eat a popsicle while you pee! Yep, that’s happened. Games you […]

Another problematic medical memoir.

August 13, 2016 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

This is the second problematic medical memoir I’ve read in as many weeks. Dr. Austin is an ER doctor, and his book is probably 70% standard stuff for these kinds of books – patient anecdotes and ruminations on the meaning of things. I’ve read…a lot of those books. The other 30% focuses on the impact of shift work and burnout on his family life. The 70% I loved. It was reasonably well-written, and you’d have to go out of your way to make the […]

Do you have problems? Any problems? Do you need advice? About anything? Have you ever wished, probably around 2am, that you could sit at a table with a mom (maybe your mom, maybe the imaginary mom you wish you had) who would make you a cup of tea or coffee and sit across from you and call you honeybun and be so nice and believe in you so much but also tell you exactly what you needed to do to get your shit straight? Surely […]

An awesome resource for parents.

Despite the somewhat foreboding title, this is a great reference book for tackling the innumerable ways children are little buttholes without also being a butthole yourself. One thing I liked about this book was that it spends at least as much time addressing ways to prevent things you’ll need to discipline as it does on how to handle the problems. Half of parenting is just mastering scheduling your life around naptime and getting good at redirecting and making smaller humans think things are their […]

90% great, 10% WHAT?!

Bedside Manners is a series of essays/vignettes about the encounters between doctors and patients, mostly. All but a couple are clearly intended to be true and from the perspective of Dr. Watts, who is a gastroenterologist. (The couple that seem to be about some other doctor are weird.) His writing is prosey and nice, and stories fly by, and the subject matter is surprisingly interesting. (Not that I’m surprised that the 6,049,284th medical memoir I’ve read was interesting. But he’s a gastroenterologist.) Are you hearing […]
