I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Few triggers but overall a delightful read

Layers: A Memoir by Pénélope Bagieu

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This weekend was unintentionally a weekend where I learned I have read so much that I’m repeating authors and not even realizing it! One of the books I read was Layers: A Memoir by Pénélope Bagieu (translated by Montana Kane). When I saw what else they had written I was shocked. I’ve read several of their books in English. I started with the title Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World (lovely collection of women who were brazen); California Dreamin’: Cass Elliot Before the Mamas […]

Camp, love, broken friendships

Paper Planes by Jennie Wood

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Friendship is at its best and worse in Paper Planes by Jennie Wood and illustrated by  Dozerdraws. We follow two characters at a camp that seems like any summer camp, until you realize the girls there have some interesting events in their past that have made them come to this point. And each girl has to show they can be “normal” and “safe” before they go back into the real world. And our two main characters have several issues, not only did they do something […]

If ducks can solve mysteries maybe fairies are real?

Detective Duck V02 The Case of the Missing Tadpole by Henry Winkler

Fairy Door Diaries: Eliza and the Flower Fairies by Megan McDonald

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One of the fun parts of my job is reading books before they come out. And reading books that are below my physical age because I can say I am “reviewing” it for work. Of course, I usually just say that I’m reading for fun as I’m not embarrassed to read a book for a six to ten-year-old. And the below two books are those kinds of books. The nice thing about Detective Duck V02 The Case of the Missing Tadpole is that you do […]

Presenting: Awkward and Amusing truths

The Secret Lives of Candy Hearts by Tommy Siegel

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Secret Lives of Candy Hearts by Tommy Siegel is a solid 3.5. It is not WOW or original (the themes have been done before) but the way they are presented is fun. And a little creepy (the giant Candy Heart heads on Han Solo and the Storm Trooper was off putting, but amusing). Things are totally adult (at least PG-14 due to subjects, including drug use/commentary) and it is quirky. The illustrations can be a hit and miss for me (yes Han Solo your […]

A field trip for the ages

Lost In The Future V01: The Storm by Damian

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lost In The Future V01: The Storm by Damian and illustrated by Alex Fuentes is a fun adventure story in a graphic novel format, that is short, (maybe not sweet) but has some interesting segments. It has the action and the friendship aspects that keep things moving without being “too much” adventure and no plot, or all plot and not enough action.  The art is the real drawback for me with the too Nickelodeon-like and/or Uncle Grandpa/Gravity Falls/Steven Universe/The Amazing World of Gumball/etc. images. From […]

Feelings Wo-o-o feelings

Max and the Purple Worry by Kitty Black

Sometimes When I'm Jealous by Deborah Serani

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Emotions are an interesting thing. And recently I read two picture books that dealt with them in different, but equally well presented ways. Both books are available, but I read them via an online reader’s copy. “Is that a seven or a chicken?” Worry asks in Max and the Purple Worry. Well if Max does math the way I do? It is a chicken. And like Max, I worried about my math work, too. The numbers (or me) didn’t run away, but I wanted to. […]
