I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Lady of the Lines: How Maria Reiche Saved the Nazca Lines by Sweeping the Desert by Michaela Maccoll and Elisa Chavarri

February 10, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lady of the Lines: How Maria Reiche Saved the Nazca Lines by Sweeping the Desert by Michaela Maccoll and illustrated by Elisa Chavarri has the privilege of being one of my favorite books of 2025 so far. Due in April 2025 (I read via an online reader copy) I hope you run out and preorder it at your local independent bookstore, buy copies for all the kids (and adults) you know, for town and school libraries, not to mention for the tiny free libraries on […]

Ok! Ok! I have a dirty mind so this wasn’t what I thought of when they said “Taking a missionary position.”

Dendo: One Year and One Half in Tokyo by Brittany Long Olsen

February 10, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

No, this book, Dendo: One Year and One Half in Tokyo by Brittany Long Olsen, will not convert you. Yes, Olsen does talk about her church and its beliefs. If you take this as a book that covers almost two years of her life, as a book that just lets you see into a person’s life and take it as that and not as a long LDS pamphlet, then it is fine. If you are a former missionary, if you are a member, if you […]

Charles Addams, Shel Silverstein, AA Milne and Edward Gorey had a baby this would be its cousin.

The Boy Who Lived in a Shell: Snippets for Wandering Minds by John Himmelman

February 10, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If Charles Addams, Shel Silverstein, AA Milne and Edward Gorey had a baby this would be its cousin. The Boy Who Lived in a Shell: Snippets for Wandering Minds by John Himmelman is not necessarily spooky or kooky like Addams or Gorey; or rhyming like Silverstein and does not have the sweetness or innocence of Milne, but a mixture that is all its own. Due mid-March 2025, I read via an online reader’s copy. The stories the boy talks about, or actually writes, are on […]

I picked a couple fun images from online, but the whole book I wish I could publish here!

Monster Cats Vol. 1? by Pandania

February 5, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What can you say about a book that is titled, Monster Cats Vol. 1? Well, you can say it is by Pandania. You can say it is fun, cute and silly. It is an easy to read manga comic that talks about, in a conversational format, about the “narrator” and their particular monster cats. No, they are not cats who have monster personalities, but are actual monsters: vampires, invisible man (woman?) cat, a yeti, sirens, and even mimics and moving chests. To be read in the […]

Everybody Scream!: Disney Tim Burton's the Nightmare Before Christmas: Pop Up, Play, and Display! (Uplifting Editions) by Disney and Evie Day

February 5, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Perhaps Everybody Scream!: Disney Tim Burton’s the Nightmare Before Christmas: Pop Up, Play, and Display! (Uplifting Editions) is for kids (there are “pop ups” that are like paper on a popsicle stick (without the stick) puppets that you can play with via the back cover of the actual book) or perhaps it is for adults. If they are a huge fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas (NBC) franchise, this would be a great addition to their collection regardless. And regardless of who you buy it […]

Cockatiels for Two: A Book of Cat Cartoons by Leo Cullum

Tequila Mockingbird: A Book of Animal Cartoons by Leo Cullum

February 5, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago one of my cousins texted me to inform me that she left some books at her mothers place she thought I might like. I thanked her but then forgot about it. A few days later, there were a few books on the table (my dad had stopped by her place and was elected the delivery boy). They were these larger, square, white covered books called Cockatiels for Two: A Book of Cat Cartoons by Leo Cullum and Tequila Mockingbird: A Book […]
