I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

The Horse’s Haiku

May 3, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

From the field to the stable and from riding to rest, Michael Rosen captures what it is to be a horse in the haiku poetry of The Horse’s haiku. There are three sections each marked by a heading or title to the following haikus. Each one talks about horses, what it does and the surrounding things and places. The way the poems are formatted makes the story flow. This prose poetry after a while stops being “poems” and becomes just another horse tale. Stan Fellows […]

Mommy’s Khimar is Lovely

May 3, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A young American-Muslim girl tells about her mother’s colorful khimars (or headscarf). She plays dress up in them (she is a princess, a mamma bird) and her mother shows her how to properly wear it as well. The girl talks about all the things she does. Just like any other child. She talks about a grandmother who does not go to the mosque, but is loved and is a member of her family. And she talks about her extended family in the mosque. She talks […]

Dog Man and Cat Kid To the Rescue?

May 3, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

In the fourth adventure of Dog Man (a police officer who is a dog) we see Dog Man and his new sidekick, Cat Kid, fighting evil and trying to find a missing actress. While this book is partly a standalone title, it does help to have read the other books in the series. Therefore, while the adult should pick up enough to be okay with the lack of backstory, your child will probably need to have read all the others first. The other point is […]

A Celebration

May 1, 2018 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I love what stores call “counter books.” Which are those fun books that you find at the checkout.  Do not dismiss them. They might not be War and Peace but you never know what you will find. I found a book about Elmo (yes that Elmo), Justin Trudeau (yes that Justin Trudeau), Sisters (multiple books), Lego spoofs (most not for children), Star Wars fun (both “real” and spoof) and 50 Queers. That is the book I will mention here: 50 Queers Who Changed the World: […]

Howl: A Graphic Novel

April 30, 2018 by BlackRaven 8 Comments

I first read Allen Ginsburg’s Howl: The Graphic Novel many years ago. I was familiar with the poem, of course, but every time I read it I find something else. I do not know how many times I have read it and even after all those readings, I still do not understand it. In fact, I think if you say you do understand Howl, you are not being truthful.  There are too many references the modern reader would not get. However, you get the jest: […]

Franny’s Father is a Feminist

April 27, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Franny’s father knows that girls can do anything that boys can do. And he supports her in all of her endeavors. The straight forward text and shows the bond between a modern father and his daughter. It has a very modern tone. Franny’s Father is a Feminist by Rhonda Leet and Megan Walker show how a male can be a feminist, too. Not overly “preachy” it will not be for everyone. Some people embrace the word Feminist, others not as much. This book truly is […]
