I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

BlackRaven's Reviews:

To Be Quiet or Not to Be Quiet That is the Question!

May 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is actually a 4.5 due to the heavy subject matter. The lovely illustrations do help push it closer to a 5. The younger child probably will not get the meaning of the story, but it still is a funny story about a rooster crowing and giving someone a bit of grief because of it. The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet! by Carmen Agra Deedy and Eugene Yelchin is a story about a town where everyone has a song to sing. And usually, […]

Shaking Things Up

May 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Poems about 14 different women who “shook things up” and changed the world are seen on the pages of Shaking Things Up: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World by Susan Hood. Various female illustrators illustrate each person’s story in their signature style. From Ruby Bridges (not a woman, but a 6-year-old girl) to the first woman NYC fire fighter (and slave to a local firefighter) to a pair of sisters who were spies (and very important to the war effort. And one was even […]

Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave

May 8, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave by Jessica Hische is an interesting take on being brave, adventures and trying new things. The narrator has done many things today and tomorrow they will try to do them all over again. They will keep trying if they did not make it today or even if they did not make it tomorrow. They know that is okay. Tomorrow I’ll be all the things I tried to be today: Adventurous, Strong, Smart, Curious, Creative, Confident, & Brave. And if I wasn’t […]

May 7, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Julian loves mermaids. And one day, while riding the subway home with his Abuela, Julian notices three women spectacularly dressed up. They are mermaids! Imagining himself as a mermaid, Julian’s dream is interrupted when they must get off the subway. But that does not stop him. He finds a way to continue using his imagination. Rabbit Moon

May 7, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Jean Kim, in rhyming text, tells how Rabbit comes out to play with his friends on a very moon-filled night. The themes of play, wishes, loneliness and friendship all come together in Rabbit Moon. Rabbit takes the paper airplane wishes all the way to the moon, he grinds them up into stardust and spreads their light around the sky. But this is lonely work, so one-night Rabbit goes down to play with the animals making the wishes. And while he is having much fun, he […]
