Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Car says Kate Dopirak and Mary Peterson. And our little car is off beeping goodnight to all his friends. And by the end, pulls in back at home, sleepy and ready to go to bed himself. The end. Sadly, there is not a lot of text to this book for the toddler crowd. The text loses traction for many reasons. The least being the short amount of text. The main one is the story has been done before. However, if you are […]
Sail Away on Poetry
I do wonder what Langston Hughes would have thought of Ashley Bryan illustrating his poems. I would assume that he would enjoy the art as much as I do. In the signature style of Bryan, he gives life to poems with vibrant, powerful colors. The lines flow and are complimentary to the text of Hughes. The two art forms are paired nicely. Bryan has both a modern and classic feel to his work. And the words of Hughes still speak to us all these years […]
Ordinary but Extraordinary
This is probably not the place to admit, I have never read a novel by Jane Austen. (Though I did read Austenland by Shannon Hale and The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, so I have been introduced to how Ms. Austen has influenced the world of literature). Classics have never been my cup of tea; therefore, I have read very few. However, I do enjoy reading biography of authors. Even if they are in a picture book format. While I am giving Ordinary, Extraordinary Jane […]
Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up
Finally, a book that I can say, “DANG!” about and not have anything really negative to say about it. Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up by Sally M. Walker and illustrated by William Grill has everything in it I am looking for in a book: good text, good facts, a story within those facts and interesting artwork. It also is accessible to the reader. It might not become a classic, but it is modern and would be a great addition to a personal or […]
Ships Ahoy!
The Antlered Ship is a bizarre little book. I have to say, while I do not hate it, I have done multiple reads on it and still am not truly sure what I think about it. The most interesting part of the book is the fantasticalness of it, but it hints at the realism of animals. A fox sets off on a seafaring voyage with the crew being deer and pigeons. One meat eater on the ship does make cause for worry by this reader. […]
Possum Adventure
Possum, the lead character of Possum’s Harvest Moon by Anne Hunter is back in Possum and the Summer Storm. First, Hunter’s illustrious are fantastic. They are lighthearted, realistic and full of their own details and story. Second, this is a sweet story of a daddy possum and the little possums and what happens after their home is washed away in the storm. Finally, I was missing some scientific information. I was wondering, “Isn’t it the mother possum and not the father possum who takes care […]
