I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Love Is Love

May 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Love is Love by Michael Genhart and Ken Min tells of how a one child tells his friend how he is teased due to his two dads. As you go along, you see, as our narrator does, that love is love no matter if you have two dads, two moms or one of each. The only real issue I have with this story is that the people that should be reading this, will not be. Some people do not think being gay is acceptable. Or […]

Being Special and Rare

May 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story is of a little girl, Ava, who loves the rainbow after the rain so much she wishes it would stay forever. In fact, this is such a lovely thought she dreams the rainbow did stay. And when she wakes up, she thinks she is still dreaming as the rainbow is still there! Shining bright and colorful and beautiful as ever. Ava and the town have fun enjoying the rainbow. And soon realize day or night, the rainbow is staying. People come from far […]

Not a gas for this reviewer

May 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was a ten-year-old boy in a former life. Yes, I think fart jokes can be funny. Unfortunately, Someone Farted laid an egg. It had potential to be a real strong one: Nobody admits that they are the one that dealt it, though everyone smelt it (yes, I went there). The adventures keep happening to our car-trip-taking family (arrested, going to jail, dealing with the aftermath of the somewhat confession). They keep building up and up to some great explosive conclusion. Then, nothing. It just […]

The Sleeping Beauty

May 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This illustrated version of The Sleeping Beauty follows the production of the New York City Ballet’s production. The storyline, choreography, costumes and sets come to life with Valeria Docampo’s brilliant and vibrant art. The colors pop, the text of the story is complimented and we are introduced to a familiar story with a twist. This book would be an interesting book to have a disc with it and hear the music and the story read while you read along with your book. (I show my […]

Edie Is Ever So Helpful or Not….

May 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Well intentioned, but not always having her plans work out, is our Edie. She is that modern girl, with a modern take on life. The title Edie is Ever So Helpful is your first clue that Edie probably is not so helpful. And Sophy Henn in text and illustrations, follows our heroine throughout the story showing this in colors as vibrant as Edie herself. Some of the helpful things our Edie does is wake the family up… with a very loud song. She styles her […]

Just Listening

May 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Rabbit Listened has a lot of the things I dislike in a book: sparse text and illustrations. However, this time, they fit the theme perfectly. The theme is a young child, Taylor, does not know how to proceed with dealing with their feelings when something bad happens. But all his animal friends know how to handle it. Yet, nothing really fits until the rabbit has the perfect solution. Rabbit listens. The sparseness of the text and art is just that: listening. You do not […]
