I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Gettin’ Bizzy

I am sorry to say, I am not a fan of David Shannon. I can appreciate the hard work that goes into creating his art and his stories, but they have never really been my cup of tea. The illustrations are disjointed and harsh to my eyes. With that said, I know many people who enjoy his works and to them I say, “Fantastic!” Because it is always nice to know someone likes a book (even if it is not one you enjoy). I was […]

Killer Lady!

June 20, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had forgotten I had read Swimming with Sharks by Heather Lang (illustrated by Jordi Solano). Therefore, when picking up Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating I figured it was the first time I had been introduced to Eugenie Clark. While reading, I realized it was the same person. The nice thing was, they are so radically different that even if you have read one you can read the other and enjoy it, […]

Lola and Friends

June 20, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As always, I wish there were “halves” to the rating system. This is a 4.5 and a strong one at that. But I am not “jumping up and down” and “omg this is on my BBF” (Best Book Forever) list. It is just a fun book. Kids will enjoy it and most adults will not mind re-reading. Megan Maynor has written a modern twist to nursery rhyme, “The House That Jack Built.” Not only is “Jack” a girl (our heroine Lola), she does not build […]

Stick Your Head in the Sand

June 19, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was drawn to The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World’s Coral Reefs: The Story of Ken Nedimyer and the Coral Restoration Foundation because of the illustrations. Yes, do not judge a book by its cover, but also yes, it can grab a reader’s attention to see if they want to “check it out” and I did.   I did not pay attention to the author while reading. Sometimes that can take away from a picture book for me. However, I was not really surprised to […]

Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert (Maybe)

June 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sophie is a unicorn expert. And if you do not believe her, she will tell you. And she does that in Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert. She knows everything there is to know about unicorns: what they should do, what they should learn, how they should look, what they should eat, even that their horns grow back if they lose them. Sometimes her mother does not agree with how Sophie teaches them (as mothers do not realize that magic is more important than cleaning up messes). […]

Tokyo Ghoul: Not your parents graphic novel!

June 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have heard of Tokyo Ghoul off and on for a while now. I never really had any interest in reading it, as the images I had seen did seem a bit “too much” for my tastes. However, I am curious. I feel, as a reader and bookseller, I should try and experience many different genres. Therefore, when I saw the book Tokyo Ghoul Illustrations: Zakki in the damaged box, I assume it was a Tokyo Ghoul graphic novel and picked it up. It was […]
