I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

My Papa is a Princess and So much More

June 25, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Papa is a Princess is a slightly preaching book. After all, the cover is after all pink, with a stereotypical looking top-half of a male in a crown. At other times it is more straight forward and less in your face. They never say inside the book that Papa is a princess, but it is obvious due to the cover/title. But they mention when he is a hairdresser, firefighter, race car driver, etc. The book mostly is a dad having father and daughter time […]

Depression & Other Magic Tricks

June 22, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

You know that a book is good when you highlight/mark something in the acknowledgements of the author. Depression & Other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim is a collection of poems dealing with depression: thoughts, what she wishes others knew, conversations she had, the struggle and finally, the hope they have that they will be well someday. While the poem “Explaining My Depression to My Mother” has become the poem associated with Benaim it was her poem “On Releasing Light” that I got the “feelz” from. […]

I’m Sad…. and that’s okay

June 22, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Michael Ian Black has created a new book in his “I am” series. I’m Sad is about being sad. But not just about being sad. It is the bad and good about being sad. Flamingo is sad and his two friends (a little girl and a potato) try to cheer him up. Yet, they also talk about that maybe it is okay to be sad sometimes, too. They also let Flamingo know that he is not alone, that everyone feels sad. Even astronauts and potatoes. […]

Sleep Tight, Charlie

June 22, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Charlie is rude and inconsiderate. However, the other animals are, too. And since all Charlie wants to do is to go to sleep, it is understandable why he is grumpy. Yet, there is nothing redeeming about any of the characters. The only funny part is when Charlie is so tired that he puts his slippers in the water glass, hugs his rug and looks for teddy bears in the night stand. Adults can relate to being in a state of that much exhaustion. The twist […]

Different but same

June 22, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I Am a Cat by  Galia Bernstein has two parts to it: For the young readers, “Hey! Look at all the different cats! Tall and black and in the jungle…” For the older and adult readers, “Hey! Look at all the different cats, but hey, that is like us, look at all the different people and yet we are all people.” This is not “thumped” into us, but the connection is fairly obvious. Yet, it is also just a nice story about a cat.   […]

Stuck in the Middle with …. Wednesday

June 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is nothing wrong with this book. It is a nice “little read” yet, it really did nothing for me. The illustrations do have a soft tone to them that makes it pleasant to read as well as to look at. But Whale in a Fishbowl by Troy Howell has something that I am not a huge fan of and that is it is a tad bit too poetic.   Which is a funny thing as I love poetry and I enjoy poetic. However, when […]
