I think the only book I have liked Matthew Cordell’s illustrations in is Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie by Julie Sternberg. His “scattered” style are lacking for me. There is the right amount of color and detail to compliment the story, yet, I am not “there” with him. This book is in his style from illustrations to text and I, sadly, find nothing in it I like. The characters are lacking something for me. The story is flat. It is too busy overall. […]
Just Add Glitter and The Fun Happens
Just Add Glitter has an interesting concept: do a craft project by adding glitter. Of course, it gets out of hand. The moral is that if you have too much of a good thing you cannot see the real things that sparkle. A big plus for me is that the child does clean up in the end. This is a nice touch. Usually the mess is left for someone else or never mentioned. I think, while books should be fun, be sneaky and put a […]
Sleepy time at the Zoo
c by John Hutton is a bed time story with not a lot of actual story. There are things the animals do (but not a lot to be honest) before the elephant and rhino (the “mother and father” figures without going to deeply into that part of the theme) decide everyone has to go to bed happens, but that is it. I was hoping, before they head off for sleepy time, the zookeeper (who they have woken up with the noise) might catch them and […]
Pop the Classic
This is a take-off of the Buffy Summers story during the TV series, but forgets there was movie (as many fans do). Most of Sunnydale is there (Willow, Xander, Giles, Buffy’s mom) but has Buffy as an 8-year-old girl, just coming into her knowledge she is a slayer, instead of the teen she is during the series. Actually, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A Picture Book starts off with Buffy “now” doing what she does best (slaying vampires) and then flashes back to being eight […]
Dust for Dinner and A Family
I have always enjoyed a good historical fiction book. Regardless of the age. Sometimes, the younger books will leave out detail for the sake of the story; to not bog it down; yet, it never really takes away from the story. I was hoping Dust for Dinner would be like that. And for the most part, it is. However, there is little action. They have a happy life. They get the storms. They must sell the farm. They head towards California. There are events that […]
Protest yourself into a good read
This is more of a 4.5 than a 4. I like it. The art is really “nifty” and cool. The story has been done before. However, it is done slightly different than usual as well. I am not sure it is really meant for kids (or if it is, at least 5 and up). It really is a more adult take on the subject. The book itself is basic: With very simple text it talks about how instead of doing some of the violent […]
