Cece Loves Science Experiments

July 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cece Loves Science is the first picture book in a new series. Cece is a clever girl who asks questions. She loves science and she cannot wait to find out the answer to the question, “Do dogs eat vegetables?”  Cece and her best friend, Isaac, tackle this question for their school project. Using the steps of science (brainstorming, asking questions, experimenting, and more) the answer soon is clear. Or is it? Cece learns that sometimes your first answer is not the only one. Overall the […]

From Football field to the Art Gallery

July 16, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who is Ernie Barnes? Some people might know him from the football field and some might know him from the art galleries. I know him from Between the Lines: How Ernie Barnes Went from the Football field to the Art Gallery by Sandra Neil Wallace (and illustrated by Bryan Collier). Barnes was a young boy growing up in North Carolina. Shy, not good with words and a love of art set him apart at an early age. However, he was unable to partake in the […]

A Small Blue Whale finds a Friend or two or three….

July 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A Small Blue Whale has one of those covers that makes you say, “Well this looks interesting. Let’s read it.”  However, while this is a delightfully nice book nothing “grabbed” me about the text. The illustrations, though, are fun and attractive. They have great color and a tone to them that is pleasant to the eye. These illustrations are realistically abstract. There is no question to what the animal is, but it is far from what the animal should look like.   The story is […]

Baby Panda Chews Bamboo and steals your Heart

July 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I give this a five rating it is more of a 4.5 rating. This is due to the fact that there are a lot of facts about panda, but I would have liked to have seen just a few more. The photographs are amazing and the real draw to the book. Baby Panda Chews Bamboo focuses on the baby panda without a lot of “heavy” facts but does not leave anything out. It even their status on the endangered list (which has improved over […]
